The Team...

The purpose of the Communications & Community Relations Division team is to create and enhance a positive image of the Port by building awareness and understanding of Port operations among the international maritime industry, port complex stakeholders, local and regional communities, and Port employees and to provide strategic communications services, messaging, media relations, brand awareness, community and education programs as well as addressing both anticipated and unforeseen communications challenges and opportunities. 


 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Role...
Under the supervision of the Video and Technology Officer, the Administrative Intern will assist Communications staff with video/audio production and online media.

How you get to contribute:
  • Assist with scheduling of Port Media Studio facility, used for web streaming, video and audio recording and editing, photography, etc.
  • Assist with recording of videos on location.
  • Assist with posting video and other content to web and social media platforms.
  • Assist Video and Technology Specialist with editing various segments and projects.
  • Assist with developing scripts, stories and story ideas.
  • Assist Video and Technology Specialist and Social Media manager with producing social media posts.
  • Assist with miscellaneous tasks related to posting web and social media content, maintaining archives.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

Required Experience and Qualifications:
  • Junior or Senior college student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate. A major in Public Administration, Journalism, Communications, International Business or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Customer service experience preferred.
  • A history of successfully working with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise is desirable.
Job Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of sound business communication; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation is essential.
  • Knowledge of uses and functions of content management software and social media platforms required.
  • Knowledge of general computer skills and applications.
  • Some experience with video production preferred
 Technical Skills Needed:

  • Knowledge of photo and video editing software (Photoshop, Premiere, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience updating social media platforms required.
  • Basic knowledge of website function (HTML, CSS etc.) preferred.
  • Must be able to use MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and other applications.
  • Must have good note-taking, proofreading and editing skills.
  • Must make effective use of available resources.
  • Must be motivated to take on new tasks and learn new processes as necessary.
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License to perform work-related duties, including driving to meetings and work-related events.

  • A high degree of tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with sensitive and confidential situations is required.
  • Must be able to assist and support internal client needs and responds to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Require a collaborative work style, fostering cooperation and teamwork.

SPECIAL NOTE
This is an unclassified, "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time.  In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach. 

The non-career Intern position typically works 20 hours per week, and cannot exceed an average of 29 hours per week throughout the year, up to a total of 1040 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
