We are seeking an individual, who has demonstrated a willing commitment to these values, holding them in high regard, to join our team as a Planner.

The purpose of this position is to assist with the development review and long range planning activities and operations for the City of Cedar Hill.  This is accomplished by reviewing site plans and plats to determine compliance with codes and ordinances; making recommendations for zoning changes and conditional uses based upon planning principles; and performing research on best practices in the areas of form based codes, transit oriented development and small area plans.   This position would also include the review and preparation of staff reports and presentations to boards/commissions and City Council.  Other duties would include the following:  responding to professional and citizen inquiries; preparing maps and graphics; drafting ordinances and performing file research; providing demographic data; future growth analysis; recommending land development policies and ordinances; survey compilation and interfacing with other City employees and citizens.   This position must coordinate with outside agencies and/or developers.  This position does not provide direction to other employees.

  • Provides premier customer service to internal and external customers by responding to requests in a timely and professional manner. Examples would include answering questions from letters, phone calls and walk-ins to office and participating in meetings related to new inquiries.
  • Lead and coordinate strategic and long-range planning efforts with the Department and with other agencies. Utilize independent, professional judgment to assist in the daily functions of the Planning Department and special projects. 
  • Initiate and coordinate city-wide plans that affect land use. Participate in planning, development and implementation of planning programs and processes.
  • Examine and propose ways to further use GIS to improve planning and business processes.
  • Perform necessary research for the composition of land development ordinances.Review and revise as needed, policies and procedures for development review.
  • Provides demographic data, future growth and survey compilation by arranging information from diverse sources and organizing information into appropriate form for multiple uses.
  • Regular attendance required.

What You Bring to the Role

  • Bachelor's degree in planning, architecture, engineering, public administration or related field required.  Master's degree preferred.
  • At least two years of related experience required. A Master's degree in planning, architecture, engineering, public administration or a related field may be substituted for the related experience required.
  • Valid Texas driver's license required
