This year, many Australian communities have been affected by bushfires. People—and animals—have lost their lives and their homes. The Australian Speculative Fiction community asked the question, ‘What can we do to help?’
‘Stories of Hope’ was born from the smoke and ashes, an anthology of fantasy and science fiction tales based on the theme of ‘hope.’ All money raised from the sales of this book will be donated to WWF's Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund and the Red Cross Disaster Relief & Recovery Fund.
This is no ordinary anthology, it’s a message of hope for the future.

I have't quite finished reading all the stories but one thing I do know: in this anthology, no matter whether your preference is for fantasy or sci-fi or even witty horror, you will be sure to find a five-star story among these. Your five-stars may be different from my five-stars, but there will be stories you absolutely love - a handful that will stay with me for a long time. The best thing about them is that they all hold out a thread of hope in the darkest of times.
Disclaimer: I DO have a story in here, but I won't be hurt if you don't choose it as your favourite LOL. There is a banquet of good things, and I'm just a teeny bit of it.

I bought this to support an Australia-wide bushfire relief charity. I knew it would be a mix of amateur and professional writing, and had no particular expectations.
Then I started reading.
It's wonderful. Each short story (and poem) is a gem - an idea polished and presented with love, and hope. With each story I grew more impressed by the whole anthology. I'd like to thank and congratulate all the authors and editors who made this happen.
I'm confident in recommending this to all who enjoy a vibrant and varied display of literary care, good yarns, and a few deeply thoughtful poems too. There's plenty of hope in here, a whole lotta love, and a lot of great reading. Enjoy.

Yes, I'm an author of one of the stories. And as with most anthologies, there are stories I love, stories that are okay, and stories that don't interest me.
That's why most anthologies I read get three stars.
It means I liked the overall read.
Of course, there are some big winners, and I'll read them a few times.
First and foremost, I am a reader, and I have specific needs when it comes to stories I enjoy.
What I hope is that you find some stories that you love and will re-read a few times.
There are enough here to satisfy a lover of short stories for a good, long read.
Enjoy!

September 21, 2023The lovely thing about these stories is that they are all hopeful...and short, so you can have a quick uplifting read with a speculative twist.
Confession: I have a story in this book and I have only read a few stories but I want to comment on some.
The Power of Birds by Maureen Flynn
A fitting beginning to this anthology that raises money for the victims of the bushfires including the animals.
Practice Child by Rebecca Bowyer
Very interesting story about a person breaking the parenting rules for their practice child.
Wings by S. F. Flanigan
Sweet little story about a mistreated disenfranchised magical creature.
The Garden of Hades by Suzanne Rowntree
A great short story about Persephone with an unexpected twist.
Hope Moves by Belinda Brady
I liked the reason for wanting to live in a snowy place and the unexpected ending.

I am an author of one of these stories, but please believe me when I say that this collection is thoughtful, well written and filled with some of the most wonderful short stories I have ever come across. As the title suggests, they are stories filled with hope, written in the wake of the devastating bushfires that ravaged Australia several years ago.
