The daughter of a famous clergyman, Ruth trained as a physician and psychotherapist. Her most famous patient was the poet Sylvia Plath, whom she treated and advised from the time of Plath's first suicide attempt at age 20 until her death.

In later life, Ruth became an Episcopal priest and professor of psychiatry and pastoral care at the Perkins School of Theology of Southern Methodist University. She was a past president of the Association of Women Psychiatrists and former chairman of the Committee on Religion of the American Psychiatric Association.

Daughter of Donald Grey Barnhouse and Ruth Wineureta Tiffany.

Married first, Francis Charles Edmonds, Jr., in 1940 (div.). Two children.

Married second, William Frederick Beuscher. Five sons.
