A New Theatre Festival in the Sullivan Catskills

September 6-8, 2024

In The Works ~ In The Woods - September 6-8, 2024

Welcome!

The IN THE WORKS ~ IN THE WOODS Festival was created and founded in 2021 at the Forestburgh Playhouse.  It grew out of the passion for nurturing, developing and celebrating new plays and musicals ~ and the diverse writers and artists who bring them to life.

During an exhilarating week every September, dozens of creators from around the country gather on our enchanting Forestburgh, NY campus to rehearse, rewrite, commune, workshop and share their gifts with our community at large. Over the course of the festival weekend – we present staged readings of the new plays, new musicals and 2 new solo cabaret acts. .

In addition, the Festival features Q & A talkbacks with our audiences, Off The Cuff conversations with world-renown theatre-makers, open-mic nights, tastings by local food and beverage artisans - and plenty of other wonderful surprises.

Be a part of the magic – and come check out the 2024 IN THE WORKS~IN THE WOODS Festival.  Help us support emerging and established theatrical artistry – and carry on the brilliant and unique, theatrical legacy of the Sullivan Catskills!

2023 Festival New Works Included:

STAGE MOTHER, a new musical with book by Brad Hennig, music by Zina Goldrich and lyrics by Marcy Heisler.  Directed by Denis Jones. STAGE MOTHER tells the story of a mother and church choir director from rural Texas, who inherits a San Francisco drag club from her estranged, recently deceased son. This raw, funny and heartfelt new musical explores the power of music, finding common ground, and the true meaning of family.

IN BeTWEEN, a new musical for young audiences with book and lyrics by Julia Gannon and music by Fernanda Douglas. Directed by Roque Berlanga. IN BeTWEEN is a love letter to those kids stuck in the middle. A group of “theater kids” gather together awaiting the annual musical’s cast list. Drama ensues, and their stories are told, when the kids find out the director is running an hour late!

Plus... The return of CATSKILLS CAB LAB, directed by Alan Muraoka and featuring solo performances by emerging Broadway stars AND OFF THE CUFF creative conversations with renown theatre writers and directors, AND MUCH MORE!

INVISIBLE, a new play by Douglas Lyons. Directed by Christopher Betts.  After decompressing over a tainted blunt, best friends Eemani and Jade are thrust into a wild hallucination where they are granted superpowers at a time when Black women were voiceless.

DIARY BONFIRE Written and performed by GINNA HOBEN - Diary Bonfire is an examination of death, anxiety, and the infinite mark left by social media (or any media) activity– a comedy! In 1995, Ginna made a “dead sister pledge” to carpe diem. At the same time, she began a practice of daily writing. Diary Bonfire uncovers her decades of journal entries as she investigates her choices in the years following her sister’s fatal car accident. Did she seize the day…?

Artist Testimonials

“Our time at the In The Works ~ In The Woods Festival was one of the most joyful experiences I've had working on any show. It's an idyllic place to write, rehearse, brainstorm. We had a brilliant cast who were game to jump in and try anything. And every single person at the Playhouse was there to help make the shows better. We were so supported and nurtured, and made connections and friendships with people I look forward to working with again and again. Many of the country's most enduring development opportunities for new works didn't survive the pandemic. ITW-ITW is a new gem.”

Deborah Zoe Laufer, Writer, By Any Other Name (2021)

(I know it's a bit of a ramble -- I just truly loved my time there so much. It's hard to even say how much it meant to me.)

~ “You lifted our show up and gave us the space, time, and support to get it to the next step. We will forever be grateful to you and everyone at FORESTBURGH! Thank you so very much!”

Jessica Hendy, Writer/Performer, Walking with Bubbles (2022)

~ “Working on Gordon Gets Down! at the Forestburgh Playhouse during the In the Works In the Woods festival was an instrumental step in the development of our piece. Having a full week of rehearsal with a talented group of actors and creatives, in such a supportive environment is an incredible opportunity for any writer. That amount of in depth focus and work allowed us to really trim the fat of our show and bring the main message into focus. Having multiple pieces - being rehearsed at the same time created an incredibly supportive and safe environment. The audience was not only made up of local supporters, but also the writers, creators and actors of the other pieces involved in the festival which allowed for very diverse forum for feedback. We’re thrilled to announce that our show has been selected as part of the 2023 mainstage season at the Forestburgh Playhouse!”

Caleb Damschroder, Composer, Gordon Gets Down! (2022)

~ “We had an incredible week in the woods at Forestburgh Playhouse getting to work on Bottle Shock! The Musical during the 2022 "In the Works, In the Woods” Festival, to develop the piece as we prepare for the world premier this summer in California. The time was invaluable to myself, Vadim and the writers as we learned more about the show and were able to use the time to try out some pretty big changes! So grateful to Matt and Franklin for inviting us! And what fun we had being surrounded by so many new works in all stages of development! In a creative environment like the Festival, you can’t help but be inspired by all of the great work going on around every corner!”

J. Scott Lapp, Director, Bottle Shock, The Musical!
