Proudly political, Yes! Yes! U.C.S! pulls no punches.

The bold musical, which tells the tale of the Upper Clyde shipbuilders and their famous 1970s working occupation, tackles history head on.

But more than a simplistic portrayal of this prominent moment for workers' rights, this moving production brings history to life.

Writer Neil Gore and director Louise Townsend deserve rapturous applause for their retelling of this real-life tale 50 years on.

What in the opening scene feels like too big of a task - how can two actors, who double up to become two of only three musicians in the whole show, powerfully tell a story of the masses - is not only achieved but perfected.

Through the characters of Aggie McGray (Janie Thomson) and Geraldine (Heather Gourdie), the audience is totally immersed in the heartbreak of the workers and the Scottish communities who depend on the shipyards.

I challenge anybody to watch the show and not be taken in by Thomson's hilarious and moving portrayal of a spirited young woman taking up her place in the world.

Her warmth combined with Gourdie's characterisation of plucky, hard-working Geraldine makes for a perfect match.

The two come together best when joining their vocal talents to perform the show's rousing songs, which bring together live rock and folk music for a foot-tapping, hand-clapping evening of joy.

Despite its serious message, this is a play that wants its audiences to have fun - which is ensured by plenty of audience interaction both before and during the show.

Townsend Theatre Productions certainly delivers the 'gritty drama' its posters for the show promise, but it also invites you to be part of a journey - aided by Ruth Darling's intimate set design and Jonny Halifax's animation - and to have fun along the way.

If you are looking for a glitzy, glossy, highly-stylised musical then this is not the show for you.

But such a presentation would destroy what this story is all about.

Yes! Yes! UCS! is real, raw, and riveting.

The show is running at the Lantern Theatre, Sheffield, until February 26, before heading to Cast, Doncaster, March 1-2; Seven Arts, Leeds, March 3-4; Marsden Mechanics, Huddersfield, March 11; and Caroline Street Social Club, Shipley, April 21. Full tour dates can be found online.
