Innovation Hour & Sustainability Showcase - Spring 2021

Published January 1, 2021

Welcome to the Innovation Hour & Sustainability Showcase

This year, the Office of Sustainability, Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (IIE), and Associated Students, Inc., are partnering to bring you the Innovation Hour & Sustainability Showcase (IHSS)! This virtual event will provide an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate CSULB students to display and gain recognition for all types of sustainability-related projects from a variety of disciplines.

We are seeking sustainability-focused business pitches, research posters, artworks, prototypes, videos, performances and more to be featured in on our website and also highlighted during a virtual Innovation Hour Sustainability Showcase event on April 21, 2021. Students from all majors are encouraged to submit a project of any kind, as long as it is related to a sustainability issue or solution in some way. All participants will be required to submit a 1-3 minute YouTube video pitch, preview, or explanation of your project.

Important Dates & Deadlines:

  • Wednesday, April 7
    • Submit online participation form including a 100 word description of project (use this checklist to help you submit this form)
    • Upload an engaging, 1-3 minute YouTube video explaining how your project explores sustainability idea(s), theme(s), or concept(s)
  • Wednesday, April 14 - Descriptions and videos will go live for all to view and enjoy. Judges will begin evaluating all project submissions.
  • Wednesday, April 21 @ 12-1:15pm - Winners in each category will be announced at the virutal showcase event, where attendees will have the opportunity to engage with showcase participants.

Projects will be displayed on this website as well as on CSULB Sustainability Facebook page, allowing participants to like, comment, and share projects.

This year's Project Showcase will be reviewed by judges and winners will be selected from each category. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each category. However, all students displaying a project will receive a Certificate of Participation.

In the past, we have found that the showcase is most successful when we partner with faculty who incorporate a sustainability project requirement into their spring semester courses. Faculty can encourage their classes - either through a Beachboard post or an announcement during a class Zoom session - to submit a project and attend the Innovation Hour Sustainability Showcase event to engage in conversations about the work. Contact Sustainability Coordinator Holli Fajack at holli.fajack@csulb.edu for additional information about the submission process and deadlines.

FAQ's

Current CSULB students from any discipline are invited to participate in the project showcase. This includes undergraduate, graduate, full and part-time students. Projects can be submitted by individuals or teams of students.

All types of projects are accepted including research posters, artworks, prototypes, performances, interactive displays, and project/business pitches as long as they relate to a sustainability issue or solution in some way.

In order to accommodate an online version of the Showcase, we are requiring students to create a 1 - 3 minute video about their project, post it to YouTube and provide the link to the video when completing the online submission form. Students submitting projects that are physical or visual in nature (e.g. a poster or art piece) will also be asked to upload a digital representation of their project (such as a PDF of a research poster, digital photograph of an art piece).

Generally speaking, research papers are not appropriate for this showcase, unless the findings can be effectively communicated in a short video format.

  • Wednesday, April 7, 2021: Deadline to complete the online participation form and upload 1-3 minute Youtube video (use this checklist to help you submit this form)
  • Wednesday, April 14, 2021: Online Showcase will go live and judges will begin to review projects
  • Wednesday, April 21st, 2021 from 12 - 1:15 pm: Innovation Hour Sustainability Showcase event will be held. Winners in each category will be announced! (Attendance at the event is optional and not required in order to participate in the showcase.)

This year's Project Showcase will be reviewed by judges and winners will be selected from each category. Winning teams/individuals will receive a gift card as a prize and all participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

In the past, we have found that the showcase is most successful when we partner with faculty who incorporate a sustainability project requirement into their spring semester courses. The projects would need to be submitted by April 7th in order to be included in the Showcase. See Call for Projects form for details. Contact Sustainability Coordinator Holli Fajack at holli.fajack@csulb.edu for additional information about the submission process and deadlines.

Faculty can encourage their classes - either through a Beachboard post or an announcement during a class Zoom session - to visit the online Sustainability Project Showcase and engage in conversations about the work. The showcase is a great opportunity to explore sustainability concepts and ideas with students who worked hard to present their work.
