Dr. Kyle Fox

Please tell us about your family: My family resides along the Gulf Coast of Alabama. I enjoy receiving photos and recordings of my 1-year-old niece, Aylah.

How long have you lived/worked in the Golden Isles? I have lived in the Golden Isles since the summer of 2022. Before I committed to a life here, I moved from Atlanta to Savannah in 2021.

Where is your hometown, if not here? I am a native of Jackson, Alabama, which is about 40 minutes north of Mobile, Alabama.

Where did you attend school? I attended the University of Alabama from which I hold a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in communication with a focus in political, race and gender rhetoric. I also attended Clark Atlanta University, from which I hold a Ph.D. in humanities with a concentration in African American studies.

What is your occupation? I am currently an assistant professor of communication at College of Coastal Georgia.

Who or what inspired you to pursue your career? I had no intentions to become a professor. However, I had the opportunity to teach during my master’s program and I fell in love. So, my first group of public speaking students in 2012 inspired me to pursue a career in academia.

What’s your favorite local landmark? My favorite local landmark is Driftwood Beach (during the morning).

Describe a perfect Saturday in the Golden Isles: A perfect Saturday for me is sitting on the beaches of Jekyll Island enjoying a great novel, a refreshing cocktail and background music from about 3 p.m. to sunset.

What’s the best book you’ve read lately? The best book that I have read lately in entitled “The Coming” by Daniel Black.

What are your favorite local causes/organizations? I was recently introduced to and enamored with Safe Harbor Inc. and the African American Male Initiative at College of Coastal Georgia. I am participating in the second Annual Champions for Children campaign because children are indeed our future. No matter their circumstance, it is our duty to ensure children have a chance at an enjoyable and prosperous life. During this campaign, I hope that we not only raise a significant amount of funds but also bring awareness to the plight of those children who are often overlooked in our community. CCGA’s African American Male Initiative is dear to my heart because with the program we provide a space for young African American men to be their authentic selves, while focusing on education as well as social skills. We create that safe place that is often difficult to find. I encourage everyone to support these amazing causes.

What is one thing every visitor to the area must do? One thing every visitor must do is visit Sapelo Island.

Who’s a local person you admire? A local person I admire is Dr. Marty Simmons. He has been an invaluable asset to the community. His philanthropic work as well as his dedication to ensuring our next generation has access and knowledge is commendable. He does not know but I consider him one of my role models.
