The Lawyer’s Guide To Thriving; Not Just Surviving

MAY 17-19, 2022

This event has now closed.

VIRTUAL SUMMIT 2022

Does your life as a lawyer feel like an endless struggle? Would you like to have better and more effective tools to manage yourself so you can support and inspire others? If this sounds like you, join our global summit, designed exclusively by lawyers for lawyers, where you will learn to thrive; not just survive.

During the 3 days of 17, 18 and 19 May 2022, and as part of International Coaching Week 2022, Coaching Advocates is bringing together a stellar cast of lawyers, coaches, well-being experts and psychologists experienced in working with lawyers, to share tools and knowledge to help you get more out of your life as a lawyer.

We know you’re busy, so we’ve designed the Global Summit to work around your schedule. The event has been divided into three time zones so you can pick and choose from the 20 sessions and attend at times that best suit your pre-existing calendar commitments and developmental needs.

The sessions are between 15 minutes and 60 minutes long, allowing you to attend in between your other meetings and commitments.

Each of the three streams offers you a selection of individual presentations, fireside chats, well-being activities and panel discussions built around the following concepts:

  • WHO am I ….. and am I being the very best version of me?
  • WHAT am I dealing with …. and how is that impacting my bigger picture?
  • WHERE to next …. and how do I move from surviving to thriving?

Your ticket to the Global Summit provides you with access to ALL of the sessions across all three streams and if you miss any session, on demand recordings will be available for you to watch at your convenience and viewing pleasure.

RYAN SPENCE

Workshop:

“Clarity: Are you on the Right Train?”

You’ve done everything you’re supposed to do. Good grades, the right firm, two feet firmly on the corporate ladder.  But have you ever stopped and asked yourself if you’re heading to where you want to be? Have you taken the time to check in with yourself and get clear on what you do? In this talk, Ryan Spence will share why, for the sake of your career, your relationships and your wellbeing, you need to start doing so now! He’ll also share the three questions you need to ask yourself to gain the clarity you need to stop living the life you think you should want and start living the life you do want.

London 9:30am - 10:00am
Sydney 6:30pm - 7:00pm
New York 4:30am - 5:00am

RYAN SPENCE

Well-being Session:

“Find Fifteen for your Wellness”

“If you don’t make time for your wellness, you’ll be forced to make time for your illness” – anon. We all know time is a precious resource for lawyers. And personal well-being is one of the first things to give way when work gets busy and time is short. But taking care of your wellbeing doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Consistency beats intensity in keeping the mind and body intact and is more important than ever when rates of lawyer burnout are rising.

In this well-being session, Ryan encourages you to ‘Find Fifteen’ as he guides you through a 15 minute series of breathwork, mindfulness and yoga exercises to help release tension and combat stress. You can do all the exercises from the confines of your office chair; no yoga mat or workout clothes required.

London 10:00am - 10:15am
Sydney 7:00pm - 7:15pm
New York 5:00am - 5:15am

HANNAH BEKO

Workshop:

“Time & Energy Management for Busy Lawyers”

Unfortunately it’s not possible to create more hours in the day to get everything done. In this short and snappy session you will discover how to:

  • Train yourself to be proactive rather than reactive.
  • Create space for you to think about how you are spending your time rather than running on auto-pilot.
  • Improve your productivity by focusing on the most important tasks, first.
  • Reduce stress levels and cut down on procrastination.
  • Improve work/life balance by ensuring time is used as efficiently as possible.
London 10:15am - 10:30am
Sydney 7:15pm - 7:30pm
New York 5:15am - 5:30am

LUKE MENZIES

Workshop:

“A Practitioner’s Guide to Managing Stress”

In the legal profession across several leading nations, stress has reached crisis point and is making many of us ill, giving us unhelpful addictions, causing anxiety, depression and burn-out.  You will be a very rare lawyer if you feel you don’t get stressed by your work.

By attending this workshop you will:

  • discover what “stress” really is and be able to identify what happens in your mind and body when you are stressed
  • explore the Goldilocks zone, where the level of stress is good for you
  • uncover your own stress profile and learn effective steps to manage stress
  • consider the role of a responsible leader in these stressful times
London 10:30am - 11:30am
Sydney 7:30pm - 8:30pm
New York 5:30am - 6:30am

CHRIS PARSONS

Talk:

“My life was not always as it appeared” : Chris Parsons’ story of career success, mental ill health and addiction

From the outside it appeared Chris Parsons had it all. A quick rise to partner at a leading law firm in London, overseas assignments to Italy, Hong Kong, India and Singapore and all the sunshine, swimming pools and bright city lights that signify the expat lifestyle. On the inside however, it was a different story. Underneath the scaffold of his goals, promotions and career success, Chris experienced self-doubt, anxiety and stress that led him to self-medicate with alcohol and become an alcoholic. Thankfully this was not the end for Chris – or his career. In this session Chris tells of how his “brokenness” became his strength and provides his advice to other lawyers who are suffering from mental ill health or addiction.

London 11:30am - 12:00pm
Sydney 8:30pm - 9:00pm
New York 6:30am - 7:00am

CLAIRE BIBBY

Panel Discussion:

“What is it REALLY like to go out on your own?"

Have you ever wondered what it’s REALLY like to bid farewell to your stable job (and pay cheque) at a firm or corporate and branch out on your own?

If you’ve considered working as a legal consultant, or even starting your own firm, join this panel discussion to find out the TRUTH. Because, let’s face it, before you take the leap, you want to know whether you can handle the truth!

Will you have more flexibility REALLY? How can you manage financial uncertainty? How do you survive a tech glitch with no IT department on call?

Frieda, Luke, Hannah, Claire and Ian (who each transitioned from working as employed lawyers to running their own legal practices) will share their candid stories in this session that’s sure to leave you better informed and on the path to figuring out whether this is an option for you.

Sydney 9:00pm - 10:00pm
New York 7:00am - 8:00am

SARAH LYONS

Workshop:

“Surviving vs Thriving as a working parent”

The pandemic hit working parents hard but it has also brought into the spotlight how workplaces need to support parents. This session will explore how as working parents we continually adapt to change, consider our evolving identity and we will learn some strategies for managing our energy. We will also look at the importance of (and devise your own) personal board of advisors and get started on some action planning.

Sydney 10:00pm - 10:30pm
New York 8:00am - 8:30am

JOHN POULSEN

Panel discussion:

"BARriers to Entry and Exit: what it's REALLY like before and after the Bar or the Bench"

Have you ever wondered what it’s really like to transition from practising as a solicitor and going to the Bar? What about a move from the Bar to the Bench?

During the lockdowns of the last couple of years, where have some barristers redirected their attention?  Are they returning to private practice, practising now in different ways, taking on a life in politics or going into commercial roles? If you’re already a barrister, or perhaps you’re considering a move to (or from) the Bar or Bench, this panel session is especially for you. John Poulsen will lead this experienced panel consisting of The Hon Wayne Martin AC QC, Dr Michelle Sharpe, Katie Hogan and Emma Fitzgerald as they discuss:

  • the realities of a move to or away from the Bar or the Bench
  • the challenges barristers are currently facing and ways to overcome them
  • the journey to taking silk and a judicial appointment

Join this panel discussion to be inspired by the stories and reflections of this experienced, warm and engaging panel.

SIMONE BARCLAY

Fireside Chat:

“Adding Fuel to the Fire: the (sometimes) problematic connection between practising law and addiction”

In this fireside chat, addictions clinician Simone Barclay speaks to the high-pressure, high-performance environment that creates a perfect storm for problematic drinking and drug problems. Simone’s philosophy is that most addictions or other harmful substance use patterns are rarely the primary problem. Rather they have become a (not very effective) ‘solution’ to the underlying issues from which they stem.  Simone shares the warning signs to look out for in yourself and others, and how you can change your behaviour and support those around you who want to do the same.

“Intention Tapping to Release Emotional Stress and Restore your Energy Flow”

By gently tapping on these points using our fingers we can often create significant shifts in how we feel and gain relief on emotional problems.

Seminar:

“What does it feel like to be a lawyer?: EQ for the legal practitioner”

Two moods that feature in legal practice are resentment and cynicism. These feelings can be so prevalent that, if we’re not careful, they become our “personality” increasing our chances of developing burnout and negatively impacting our wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us.

In this session you will explore how to use emotional intelligence to feel better at work and create stronger and more meaningful connections with others.

FRIEDA LEVYCKY

Workshop:

“Why did I do that? Building Awareness with the Enneagram”

Awareness and self-awareness are key to succeeding in the legal environment. Having a better understanding of people—what motivates them, what fears hold them back, what triggers them—can improve communication within teams. It brings compassion, understanding and awareness into the workplace. It improves collaboration and helps teams to work more effectively. And it helps people deal more effectively with conflict and give feedback in more useful ways. Join Frieda for a short session to explore the basics of the Enneagram and start to gain an awareness around why we behave in the way that we do.

Using his extensive background in mental health first as a clinician and then as a startup founder, Wilfred brings a unique perspective that moves beyond talking about problems to finding disruptive solutions. Being a therapist and mental health professional gives him insights into the experiences of everyday people just trying to hold on in a broken system. Wilfred has brought those insights to experiences throughout the worlds of healthcare, business, and technology. Most importantly, he champions the message that our shared humanity and connection to each other is what solves problems and serves as a foundation for building strategies that drive success.

EMILY HIRSEKORN

Workshop:

“Managing Imposter Syndrome by Confronting your Inner Critic, Tapping into your Strengths and Choosing Optimism”

Imposter syndrome can impact one’s law career at every stage. While lawyers starting in a new role question their capacity to do the job, lawyers taking on a leadership role often question their capacity to lead. Career Confidence Coach Emily Hirsekorn is going to share three specific tools designed to help manage imposter syndrome by (i) talking back to that inner critic, (ii) calling upon personal strengths, and (iii) choosing optimism to enhance self-advocacy, engagement, and career navigation. Attendees will leave the discussion with new perspectives and actionable tools to put to use right away.

PHILIPPE DANIELIDES

Workshop:

“The Key to Discovering What You Do Want”

When asked, most lawyers can easily rattle off a detailed “issues list” of what they don’t want, but struggle, if pressed, to declare what they actually do. We might attribute this to our issue-spotting education or to other commonly shared lawyer qualities, but the truth is that the source of our I-Know-What-I-Don’t-Want dilemma is much simpler and easier to “fix.” We struggle because determining what we actually want is a process – and most lawyers keep skipping one essential step. In this session, you’ll learn what that step is and how to complete it so that you can start moving in the direction of what you do want. Today.

Claire Rason

Workshop:

"What’s really stopping you from making Partner or GC?"

Claire Rason has been working on a less-than-typical diversity experiment. She set out to find out whether, if she hadn’t quit the law in 2005, she would have made partner. The results were surprising and shed new insights into why you might not be making it to the top of the profession. During this program, Claire will share her key insights and offer coaching tools and techniques lawyers can use to tackle cultural barriers to inequality in law firms and legal teams.
