Retired WGN-Ch.9 news anchor Steve Sanders sold his five-bedroom, 4,168-square-foot house in Winnetka for $1.21 million, a month after paying slightly less than that for a four-bedroom home just a few blocks away.

Sanders retired from Channel 9 in early 2020 after more than 37 years at the station. Around that same time, Sanders sold his six-bedroom house in Lakeview for just under $1.55 million and bought the five-bedroom, 4,168-square-foot house in Winnetka from a relocation agency.

Built in 2008, the house Sanders sold on July 23 has 41/2 bathrooms, three fireplaces, a family room with a fireplace, a first-floor office with a coffered ceiling and fireplace, a primary bedroom suite with his and hers walk-in closets, two laundry rooms, and a kitchen with a center island, a food warmer, a beverage refrigerator, a butler’s pantry, two dishwashers and a built-in cappuccino machine.

Sanders told Elite Street that the house “is a delightful family home and is probably more space than I needed.”

Sanders paid $929,000 in February 2020 for the Winnetka house he just sold. As a result, he netted $281,000, or a 30% return, on the home’s sale in just 17 months.

“When he bought it, the market was not like it is now,” Sanders’ listing agent, Joe Nash of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago, said. “There’s been this flight from the city to the suburbs, and he was able to make a good amount of return on the deal. And for the age of the house, it was a really good house. It did generate multiple offers and it did sell for over list price. It was a family home with a lot of bedrooms and with a really nice (primary) bedroom suite, with his and hers water closets and just a lot of high end things that you normally don’t find in a spec house, like radiant heat in the basement floors.”

Sanders listed the house in June for $1.155 million, and it went under contract in just three days.

Sanders’ new house was built in 1991 and has a first-floor primary bedroom suite.

The house that Sanders sold had a $23,726 property tax bill in the 2020 tax year.
