The Art of Abstraction Lecture Series: Textiles and Abstraction

The Art of Abstraction Lecture Series: Textiles and Abstraction

The Charleston Museum is pleased to present its spring lecture series in conjunction with The Art of Abstraction: Modernism in Quilting, currently on display in the Historic Textiles Galleries.  To kick off this series, Curator of Historic Textiles Virginia Theerman will be in conversation with quilting artist Cookie Washington and abstract painter Adam Eddy. These local artisans will talk about learning their craft, the parameters of their respective mediums, and the way they approach their creative process.

Torreah “Cookie” Washington is a textile designer who has been a working studio artist for more than 30 years.  Cookie has designed costumes for theater, film and the stage and high fashion wedding gowns and soft fashion accessories for women.  One of her proudest accomplishments was having been selected as one of 44 Master Art Quilters to create a quilt to honor President Barack Obama.  For 17 years Cookie Washington has also been guest curator & artist for the African American Fiber Arts Exhibit that is part of the North Charleston Cultural Arts Festival.  Cookie has been featured in three documentary films about African American Art Quilters.  “The Way-showers”, which she shared executive producer credit on, with Susan Scott Hester, the film “Skin Quilt” by Lauren Cross, as well as the 2020 film “Gratitude”, a short film by Gavin Shelton.  In December of 2023, Cookie Washington was honored with a Proclamation issued by John J Tecklenburg, Mayor of City of Charleston, naming December 29th “Cookie Washington Day” in Charleston, SC for her art activism and community service at the Kwanzaa Ujima celebration at the Cynthia Hurd Library.  Ms. Washington’s passion is fiber art muralism that celebrates African American culture and history and the Divine Feminine.

Adam Eddy is an interdisciplinary artist based in Charleston, SC. His work ranges from painting and sculpture to computer graphics and immersive technology. He received his MFA in painting and drawing from Boston University in 2016 and taught in the Studio Art department at the College of Charleston until 2020.
