Why this petition matters

Started by Gaye Hill

PRESERVE OUR FRIENDLY, HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD
A development group is seeking to rezone the east side of West Street from Peace to Tilden from 12 to 30 stories. This would put a 30-story building within 250 feet of historic, single-family homes. Here are just a few of the impacts this will have:

  • overshadow the historic Glenwood-Brooklyn neighborhood, Governors Hill Townhomes, Bishops Park Condominiums, and the Peace Building
  • strip away privacy & block all morning light, airflow, and sightlines
  • reflect the harsh sun into the community in the afternoon/evening

This could also set a dangerous precedent for additional potential rezoning further along West Street closer to Adams Street.

WHY WE'RE FIGHTING BACK
The Historic Glenwood-Brooklyn Neighborhood has height restrictions on construction to preserve its character, Governors Hill townhomes are 2-story, Bishops Park condominiums are 3-story, and the Peace Building is 2-3 stories lower in elevation. We would be overwhelmed by the current 12-height zoning and dwarfed by 30 stories. More appropriate action would be to increase the transition zone with a 4-story height limit to include all of West or incorporate the parcels into the new park.

Please sign this petition and consider calling or emailing the City Planning Commission and City Council to voice concerns.

Let’s not allow this to become another example of the character of Raleigh being ripped away!
