Why this petition matters

Started by Karina Blackwood

We are the Russian women offended and diminished by the message that HBO Max broadcasted in episode 8 of “And Just Like That.”

This dialogue spreads hurtful stereotypes and misogyny:

⁃ What I wanna know is how she can afford a good apartment in the center of NYC at her age?

 ⁃ Russian h**ker

HBO and its' team are taking pride in their inclusive and diverse shows and they market it to the maximum. However, HBO still found it acceptable to tie the word h**ker to a particular nationality. It wasn't just an outdated trope coming from the previous century, it was a national profiling in action.

We want to address HBO and executive producers of "And Just Like That" Sarah Jessica Parker, Sarita Choudhur and Michael Patrick King.

This show is promoted as the progressive and "woke" ones and you state that targeted every minority on it. But when it came to Russian female immigrants, something went wrong, and you found it acceptable to throw this harmful stereotype in.

Russian-speaking women are hardworking, highly educated, and intelligent. In fact, any woman deserves respect and shouldn't be put to scrutiny based on her nationality. The message that you broadcast is offensive, defamatory, and mysogynistic. It also spreads hate towards Russian immigrants. And when you feed into such stereotypes, real Russian women in real life encounter sexual objectification and violence because you help to keep such stereotypes alive.

Every day Russian women work hard to get rid of this awful cliché. They go to work, pay their taxes, and provide for their families. And in the end, we get called h**kers in your show.  How can the project that tries to be inclusive so much and has so many female writers and co-produced throw such a phrase?

We demand an official apology to all the Russian-speaking female communities. We also demand that you delete this scene from the 8th rpisode of “And Just Like That.”

Stop spreading mysogynistic and hateful stereotypes about Russian-speaking women. Stop putting us in danger by feeding into the political controversy between the countries. Culture should not be political. We should not pay for the outdated clichés!
