Central bank says amendments to Basel III could halt downward drift in risk-weighted capital ratios

The Bank of England has published its approach to implementing the final elements of the post-2008 Basel accord in the UK.

‘Basel 3.1’, as the BoE calls it, comprises the additional changes to the accord agreed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in December 2017. Some financial firms have taken to calling the changes ‘Basel IV’, complaining they are extensive enough to be equivalent to a whole new framework.
