Nigerian governor says credit programme has boosted agriculture
Emefiele repeats warning on over-reliance on oil and says central bank has lent $2 billion to farmers
Nigeria’s central bank has increased domestic food production by lending billions of dollars to the country’s farmers, said its governor.
Godwin Emefiele said the Central Bank of Nigeria had disbursed around $2.5 billion in loans since creating its “anchor borrowing programme” in 2015. Emefiele said about $2 billion had gone to farmers, with the rest going to manufacturers and extractive industries, media outlet Arise reported today (January 14).
But he warned that Nigeria still allocated too
