Nursing Home COVID-19 Vaccination Data Dashboard

Up to Date with COVID-19 Vaccines:

  • The NHSN surveillance definition of “up to date” is updated quarterly (if needed) to incorporate FDA and CDC vaccination guidance changes. With ACIP’s September 2023 recommendation that everyone aged 5 years and older receive the 2023-2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine, the NHSN surveillance definition of up to date was updated on September 25, 2023, which is the beginning of the fourth quarter 2023. See here [PDF – 672 KB] for NHSN surveillance definitions, including up to date, by reporting quarter.
  • This dashboard now reflects the new definition of up to date, as of the reporting week beginning September 25, 2023. The displays will initially show that few long-term care residents and staff have up to date vaccination status; these percentages will increase over time as residents and staff receive the 2023-2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine.
What's New

This page now includes two additional visualizations that display data on nursing home residents and staff who are up to date with COVID-19 vaccines.

Overview

Long-term care facilities (LTCF) report COVID-19 data to CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), including weekly vaccination data for residents and healthcare personnel (HCP). The LTCF COVID-19 Module enables assessment of COVID-19 vaccination coverage through facility-reported information, including counts of residents and healthcare personnel, or staff, who received COVID-19 vaccination.

CDC began collecting weekly vaccination data through the LTCF COVID-19 Module on December 14, 2020, as a voluntary reporting system. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) established COVID-19 vaccination reporting requirements for nursing homes effective May 13, 2021 (see: Federal Register). Detailed information about vaccination reporting requirements, including details about a grace period prior to enforcement, can be found in CMS memo QSO-21-19-NH. The CMS reporting requirement only applies to CMS-certified nursing homes (i.e., skilled nursing facilities and/or nursing facilities).

This page displays data on COVID-19 vaccination coverage among residents and staff of CMS-certified nursing homes. These national and state-level summaries represent data from approximately 15,000 nursing homes that report to the NHSN LTCF COVID-19 Module using one of two weekly vaccination reporting options: Nursing homes may choose to (1) submit weekly vaccination totals, including total with up-to-date vaccination status for residents and staff; or (2) submit the dates, types, and number of vaccine doses administered for each resident and staff member. With this reporting option, the NHSN application calculates the total number of individuals who are up to date based on the reporting week and vaccination dates entered.  This option provides a useful tool for facilities and a robust resource that minimizes error in classifying vaccination statuses. As represented in the figures below, most facilities report weekly totals to NHSN while a subset report vaccination doses for each resident and staff member.

CDC updates the displays on this page weekly on Thursdays by 8:00 am ET. As a result, the figures presented on this page may not exactly match data publicly posted by state health departments, CMS, or other federally coordinated programs.

Up to Date with COVID-19 Vaccines

CDC began collecting weekly data on the number of residents and healthcare personnel who are up to date with COVID-19 vaccines through the NHSN LTCF COVID-19 Vaccination Module on May 30, 2022. CDC recommends that people stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines. The NHSN surveillance definition of up to date is updated quarterly to incorporate FDA and CDC guidance changes.
