  • Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera: Could yield to Berti at third base

Yankees manager Aaron Boone isn't yet certain whether Cabrera or newly acquired Jon Berti will start at third base on Opening Day, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.

With DJ LeMahieu (foot) beginning the season on the IL and Oswaldo Peraza set to miss several weeks due to a shoulder injury, Cabrera didn't appear to have much competition for the role of the Yankees' primary third baseman to begin the campaign. That changed Wednesday, however, when New York acquired Jon Berti in a three-team trade involving the Marlins and Rays. Though there's still a chance Cabrera could start on Opening Day, it's almost certain that he'll yield substantial time at the hot corner to the more-experienced Berti, who racked up a career-high 424 plate appearances last season and hit .294 while compiling 53 runs and 16 stolen bases. By contrast, Cabrera struggled over 330 plate appearances, slashing just .211/.275/.299 with five homers, 29 RBI, 35 runs and eight thefts.

  • Yankees' Jon Berti: Could play Thursday

Manager Aaron Boone said Berti could start at third base Thursday against the Astros if he arrives in Houston with enough time to prepare, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.

Berti was acquired from the Marlins in a three-team trade Wednesday, and it's possible he's in the lineup for the Yankees a day later for Opening Day. The super-utility player should see significant action at the hot corner early in the season with DJ LeMahieu (foot) and Oswald Peraza (shoulder) beginning the campaign on the injured list.

  • Yankees' Jorbit Vivas: Recovering from orbital fracture

Vivas was diagnosed with a left orbital fracture after suffering a facial injury Monday and is considered out indefinitely, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Vivas has since been discharged from the hospital, but he appears likely to open the 2024 campaign on Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 7-day injured list. Acquired from the Dodgers in December, Vivas is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he slashed .269/.381/.407 with 13 home runs and 25 stolen bases in 135 games between stops at Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Bypassed for Opening Day start

Wells won't be included in the Yankees' Opening Day lineup, with manager Aaron Boone relaying that Jose Trevino will receive the nod behind the plate in Thursday's game against the Astros, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.

The lefty-hitting Wells will hit the bench for the season opener, which doesn't come as a major surprise with the righty-hitting Trevino having the platoon advantage in his favor against Astros southpaw Framber Valdez. Though Wells offers a higher-upside bat than Trevino, concerns about the former's defense behind the plate could prompt Boone to take a timeshare approach to the catcher spot when New York faces right-handed pitchers, at least to begin the season.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Will bat leadoff Opening Day

Manager Aaron Boone said Torres will serve as the Yankees' leadoff hitter in Thursday's season opener against the Astros, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

The Yankees are facing a southpaw (Framber Valdez) in the season opener, but Torres looks like he could be the team's top choice to set the table against both left- and right-handed pitching to begin the season while DJ LeMahieu (wrist) is on the shelf. The leadoff assignment is a nice little boost for Torres' fantasy prospects, even if it might be relatively run atop the lineup. He had a terrific spring, sporting a 1.078 OPS with three home runs and two stolen bases.

  • Yankees' Oscar Gonzalez: Discharged from hospital

Gonzalez (orbital) was recently discharged from a hospital in Mexico City and is at home resting, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.

Gonzalez suffered a right orbital fracture after fouling a pitch off his face during an exhibition game Monday. Though he seems to be doing much better two days after suffering the injury, the Yankees don't have a timeline for when he'll be ready for game action. Once Gonzalez is cleared, he'll head to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Slated for Opening Day start

Trevino will start behind the plate against the Astros on Thursday, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.

While some fantasy managers are excited about the offensive upside of Austin Wells, it will be Trevino behind the plate for the opener in Houston. Trevino is lauded for his work with the pitching staff, and that appears to have given him a slight leg up to begin the season, though it projects to be a fairly even playing-time split in the end with the 24-year-old Wells seeing a good share of the starts against righties. Trevino will be looking for his first career hit against Thursday's starter for the Astros, Framber Valdez (0-for-9 lifetime against the lefty).

  • Yankees' Jon Berti: Traded to Yankees

The Yankees acquired Berti from the Marlins on Wednesday in a three-team trade involving the Rays, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. John Cruz and Shane Sasaki were sent to the Marlins and Ben Rortvedt went to the Rays in the deal.

Berti provides the Yankees with some protection in the infield with both DJ LeMahieu (foot) and Oswald Peraza (shoulder) sidelined, and he's capable of handling the outfield, as well. He could get some starts at third base early on in the season while LeMahieu is out.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Puts together strong spring

Stroman finished the Grapefruit League slate with a 2.61 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 16:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings across five starts.

Stroman signed a two-year deal with the Yankees in January, and his role with the club took on added importance when Gerrit Cole was diagnosed with an elbow injury that will likely cost him at least the first two months of the season. Though Stroman drew some criticism for turning down an opportunity to take Cole's place as the team's Opening Day starter, his reason for doing so was tied to sticking to his pitching schedule, per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, and the right-handed hurler remains a critical component of New York's chance at success this season. Stroman certainly appears ready for the beginning of the campaign after finishing spring play with six shutout innings against Pittsburgh on Sunday.

  • Yankees' Jahmai Jones: In running for roster spot

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Jones is in the mix for an Opening Day roster spot, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

New York claimed Jones off waivers from Milwaukee in late February, and he put together a respectable .286/.429/.500 slash line with a home run, four RBI, a stolen base and a 7:8 BB:K over 14 games this spring. The 26-year-old has compiled a paltry .179/.233/.226 slash line with no homers and two thefts over 90 major-league regular-season plate appearances across three seasons, with his biggest chunk of playing time coming with Baltimore in 2021. Jones is out of minor-league options, so he'd be subjected to waivers if the Yankees don't include him on the Opening Day roster. If he does break camp with the club, he'd be a bench option capable of playing both the outfield and infield, and he could help make up for DJ LeMahieu opening the season on the injured list due to a foot injury.

  • Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: In mix for roster spot

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Rortvedt could make the Opening Day roster, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

In order for Rortvedt to break camp with the big club, the Yankees would almost certainly need to decide to carry three catchers, as Jose Trevino and Austin Wells are locked in as the top two backstop options. Rortvedt got into 15 games this spring and slashed .231/.375/.269 with one extra-base hit (a double), but the primary reason why he may have a chance of sticking on the roster is that he is out of minor-league options. Even if he does make the cut for Opening Day, Rortvedt isn't likely to see much playing time.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Healthy heading into season

Rodon pitched 19.1 innings over five starts in Grapefruit League action, posting a 4.19 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB.

Rodon made just one appearance last spring before suffering a forearm injury that significantly cut down his season, so the fact that he made it through the exhibition slate without any health issues this spring is a positive development. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Rodon dropped weight in the offseason and looked to be in better shape in camp as he aims to put last year's injury-plagued and largely forgettable performance in the rearview mirror. While the southpaw's spring stats weren't overwhelming, Kuty reports that Rodon's fastball sat in the mid-90s, which is in line with where it has been during recent campaigns. The Yankees may need Rodon to step up as the team's ace with Gerrit Cole likely out for at least the first two months of the regular season due to an elbow injury.

  • Yankees' Oscar Gonzalez: Diagnosed with orbital fracture

Gonzalez suffered a right orbital fracture during Monday's exhibition against Diablos Rojos de Mexico, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Gonzalez fouled a pitch off his face and was immediately taken to the hospital for further evaluation. He's expected to remain in the hospital overnight for observation.

  • Yankees' Oscar Gonzalez: Headed for further evaluation

Gonzalez was treated for a bruised right eye at the stadium and was then transferred to Centro Medico ABC Hospital in Mexico City for further testing, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Gonzalez was forced from Monday's game after fouling a pitch off his face, and he was eventually carted off the field. He was in line to begin the 2024 season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to suffering the injury.

  • Yankees' Oscar Gonzalez: Carted off field

Gonzalez was carted off the field after fouling a pitch off his face Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Gonzalez was reassigned to minor-league camp earlier in the day, and his status for the start of the minor-league season now appears to be in jeopardy following this scary injury. The team should have more information on the extent of the injury after further evaluation.

  • Yankees' Dennis Santana: Reassigned to minor-league camp

The Yankees reassigned Santana to minor-league camp Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Santana pitched well this spring, posting a 3.12 ERA and 10:0 K:BB over 8.2 frames. It wasn't enough to earn him a spot in the Opening Day bullpen, however, so he'll provide relief depth at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Yankees' Greg Allen: Sent to minor-league camp

The Yankees reassigned Allen to minor-league camp Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Allen went 5-for-26 at the plate in 16 Grapefruit League games. The veteran outfielder should bounce around to all three outfield spots while at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Yankees' Kevin Smith: Sent to minors camp

The Yankees reassigned Smith to minor-league camp on Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Smith was in contention for a reserve role because the Yankees lack an ideal backup shortstop, but he ultimately didn't make the cut. The 27-year-old will represent infield depth at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Yankees' Oscar Gonzalez: Reassigned to minor-league camp

The Yankees reassigned Gonzalez to minor-league camp Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Gonzalez was removed from the 40-man roster in January but played his way into contention for an Opening Day roster spot with a nice showing this spring. He ultimately fell short, though, and will provide outfield depth at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
