Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Undergoes thumb operation

Alvarez (thumb) underwent surgery on his left thumb Tuesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
Alvarez was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a torn UCL in his left thumb and he will now officially begin the road to recovery. The Mets said Tuesday that the catcher is expected to miss eight weeks of action while recovering from the surgery, likely sidelining Alvarez until late June. In the meantime, Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will continue to split the work behind the plate for New York.

Mets' Harrison Bader: Sits down Tuesday

Bader will get a day off after going 0-for-3 with a strikeout during Monday's win in the series opener. Brandon Nimmo will slide over to center field in his place, moving Jeff McNeil into left and allowing Joey Wendle to start at second base, batting eighth.

The Mets reinstated Kranick (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Kranick has been on the injured list since the start of the season due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain he suffered during spring training. He made four total rehab appearances between the Mets' Single-A and Double-A affiliates, allowing five earned runs across 7.2 innings, and he'll now move up to Triple-A as he comes off the IL. The 26-year-old right-hander owns a 5.56 ERA across 43.2 big-league innings and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022.

Mets' Starling Marte: Nabs sixth steal

Marte went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Monday's loss to the Giants.
The veteran outfielder continues to turn things around after a rough 2023. Marte has six multi-hit performances in the last 11 games, going 15-for-48 (.313) over that stretch to boost his slash line on the season to .286/.330/.451 with four homers, six steals, 12 RBI and 16 runs through 22 contests. The 35-year-old hasn't had a 20-homer campaign since 2019, his final year with the Pirates, but if he can stay healthy he's well on his way to reaching that mark again.
Alonso went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's loss to the Giants.
Alonso accounted for the Mets' first run with a fifth-inning solo blast to left field. The long ball snapped a seven-game homerless drought for the slugger, and he had gone just 4-for-26 with one RBI during that stretch. Alonso still leads the team -- and is tied for third in the majors -- with seven homers on the campaign, though he's knocked in just 12 runs.

Mets' Jose Quintana: Allows five runs in loss

Quintana (1-2) took the loss against San Francisco on Monday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four batters over five innings.
Quintana wasn't sharp in the outing, inducing just four swinging strikes and giving up a season-high five runs. The veteran hurler also yielded a season high in hits and walked multiple batters for the fifth straight start. Quintana had managed a solid 3.05 ERA despite a poor 16:11 K:BB and 1.50 WHIP coming into Monday, but the outing against the Giants paints a more reasonable picture of what to expect from the left-hander if he continues to allow batters to reach base at a high rate.
The Mets recalled Walker from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.
Walker has collected a 2.79 ERA and 10:5 K:BB across 9.2 innings with Syracuse this season. He'll give manager Carlos Mendoza another left-handed relief option with Brooks Raley (elbow) on the shelf.

Nido went 1-for-3 with a strikeout in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers.
Making his first start of the season for the Mets and batting ninth, Nido threw out Will Smith attempting to swipe second base to end the third inning -- a noteworthy event only because Francisco Alvarez (thumb) and Omar Narvaez had gone a combined 0-for-28 to begin the season in throwing out base stealers. With Alvarez sidelined and Narvaez batting just .200 (5-for-25), Nido's defense could earn him more than just a short-side platoon role while he's in the majors.
Houser (0-2) took the loss Sunday against the Dodgers, allowing eight runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over four innings.
Houser had given up just two runs through four innings after Shohei Ohtani took him deep in the third, but he was unable to get an out in the fifth and wound up being charged with six runs in the frame. The home run to Ohtani was the first Houser's given up this year, though his command continues to be a struggle, as he now owns a 12:14 K:BB to go along with a 7.45 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 19.1 innings. The 31-year-old will look to bounce back in his next outing, which projects to come against the Cardinals.

Mets' Brooks Raley: Expected to miss minimum time

Raley (elbow) had an MRI on Sunday, which revealed no structural damage in his left elbow, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Raley was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation Sunday, but manager Carlos Mendoza believes he's likely to miss the minimum two weeks following the MRI results. The Mets appear to have dodged the worst with their impressive left-hander.
Hartwig was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
The right-hander was demoted to Triple-A on Wednesday but will quickly rejoin the big club since Brooks Raley (elbow) landed on the injured list. Hartwig delivered a scoreless frame in his lone outing of the season for the Mets.
