  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Playing 2B in opener

Valdez is starting at second base and batting eighth for Thursday's opener against the Mariners, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

With Vaughn Grissom (groin) on the 10-day IL, Valdez will get first crack at second base Thursday ahead of Pablo Reyes. In spring training, Valdez slashed .204/.264/.531 with four home runs and seven RBI over 49 at-bats.

  • Red Sox's Joely Rodriguez: Selected to MLB roster

The Red Sox selected Rodriguez's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.

Rodriguez will open the season as the lone lefty in Boston's bullpen. He was limited to just 11 appearances last season due to a hip injury but was healthy and effective this spring.

  • Red Sox's Naoyuki Uwasawa: Added to roster and optioned

The Red Sox selected Uwasawa's contract and optioned him to their spring training complex, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Uwasawa is now on Boston's 40-man roster after being acquired via trade from the Rays on Wednesday, but he'll remain at extended spring training for now. The righty figures to eventually join Triple-A Worcester's rotation.

  • Red Sox's Brandon Walter: Shut down with shoulder strain

Walter will begin the season on the injured list due to a strained left shoulder, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Walter will remain in Fort Myers for extended spring training as he works his way back from his injury. The 27-year-old southpaw will head to Triple-A Worcester once he's healthy and could contribute out of the Red Sox's bullpen at some point in 2024.

  • Red Sox's Naoyuki Uwasawa: Acquired by Boston

The Red Sox acquired Uwasawa from the Rays on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Topkin says Uwasawa triggered an assignment clause in his minor-league contract. That suggests the Red Sox plan to add him to the major-league roster, although that hasn't officially been done yet. Uwasawa held a 13.03 ERA this spring but posted a 2.96 ERA across 170 innings during his last season in Japan in 2023.

  • Red Sox's Noah Song: Needs Tommy John surgery

Song, who was placed on Double-A Portland's 60-day injured list Wednesday, is slated to undergo Tommy John surgery in the near future, Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com reports.

The elbow injury is another speed bump in the development process for Song, who didn't pitch from 2020 through 2022 while fulfilling a military commitment. He was a Rule 5 selection of the Phillies last offseason before ultimately being returned to the Red Sox in August after he didn't make his MLB debut while spending much of the first half of the season recovering from a back injury. Song will now likely be sidelined until around midseason in 2025, and he will be 27 years old by that time.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Makes final spring appearance

Martin (groin) struck out one over a scoreless inning in Tuesday's exhibition game against Texas.

Martin wrestled with a groin injury and made just his third appearance of spring training, with all coming within the last week. The Red Sox are comfortable with him being ready for Opening Day despite having worked just 2.1 innings, per Drew Davison of MLB.com. He's expected to be the bridge to closer Kenley Jansen.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Throws inning Tuesday

Jansen struck out one over a scoreless inning in Tuesday's exhibition game against the Rangers.

Jansen, who was bothered by back issues this spring, made just four appearances with the final 12 days of spring training. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the pitcher is ready to go for the regular season, per Drew Davison of MLB.com.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Extended spring until April 7

Grissom (groin) will stay back in extended spring training until April 7, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Grissom will join the Red Sox at Fenway Park for their home opener at that point before heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment. Manager Alex Cora previously mentioned mid-to-late April as Grissom's timetable for a return, so the rehab assignment figures to last a week or two. Grissom missed all of spring training with hamstring and groin injuries but has been participating in baseball activities lately.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Plays outfield Monday

O'Neill started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Monday's exhibition game against Texas.

This marked the first time O'Neill played in the outfield since March 14. He had been dealing with a calf issue that limited him to designated hitter prior to Monday. O'Neill told Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe that he's "fine now" and that the club was "just being careful." It's expected that he'll be an everyday component of the lineup, but there are variables to consider. That uncertainty stems from Ceddanne Rafaela making the team as the primary center fielder, which means manager Alex Cora will have to juggle O'Neill, Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida at the corners and DH.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock: Strong effort Monday

Whitlock allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk while striking out six over six innings in Monday's exhibition game against the Rangers.

Whitlock was impressive against the first-string lineup Texas trotted out Monday. The right-hander threw 67 pitches (51 strikes) and retired nine of the final 10 batters faced. The dominant performance Monday followed a strong Grapefruit League for Whitlock, who finished spring training with a 2.49 ERA and a 22:3 K:BB over 21.2 innings. He's scheduled to start the fourth game of the season Sunday in Seattle against the Mariners.

  • Red Sox's Greg Weissert: Secures roster spot

Weissert will make the 2024 Opening Day roster, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Weissert was in danger of being left off the roster as long as Brennan Bernardino was projected to begin the year in the bullpen, but skipper Alex Cora stated Tuesday that Weissert had made the team over Bernardino, who was optioned to Triple-A Worcester. Weissert appeared in 17 games a season ago for the Yankees, posting a 4.05 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with 22 punchouts across 20 innings.

  • Red Sox's Brennan Bernardino: Fails to make Opening Day roster

Bernardino was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Bernardino was thought to be a sure thing to begin the season with the big-league squad after cruising to a 3.20 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with a 58:18 K:BB over 50.2 frames a season ago for the Red Sox. He also failed to surrender an earned run over 6.2 innings of Grapefruit League action this spring. While this is certainly a surprising move by Boston, the southpaw should be a candidate for a promotion at some point this year.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Still with team

Dalbec appears to have won a spot on the roster, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Confirmation of Boston's 26-man roster is still pending, but the Red Sox released Dalbec's main competition, C.J. Cron, on Sunday. The team could still be in the market for right-handed complement to Triston Casas at first base, although manager Alex Cora told reporters that there is a "good chance" Dalbec sticks. He finished the Grapefruit League batting .255 (12-for-47) with three home runs and nine RBI. His position versatility could be helpful, as Dalbec can play both corner infield spots.

  • Red Sox's Lucas Luetge: Headed to Triple-A

Luetge is set to open the season at Triple-A Worcester after being informed over the weekend that he won't be included on Boston's Opening Day roster, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republic reports.

Fellow non-roster invitee Joely Rodriguez ended up beating out Luetge for the final lefty reliever spot in the Red Sox's Opening Day bullpen. Though Luetge's minor-league deal with Boston contained an upward mobility clause that would allow him to opt out of his contract, the deadline for him to invoke the clause has passed, so he'll report to Worcester. Luetge had most recently spent the 2023 season in Atlanta's organization, logging a 7.24 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 13.2 innings with the big club.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not included in projected lineup

Abreu was not included in the projected Opening Day starting lineup by Ian Browne of MLB.com.

Ceddanne Rafaela has made the team and seems to have played himself into a regular role, while Abreu has struggled to a .588 OPS and 24 strikeouts in 24 games this spring. Tyler O'Neill has not played right field in the majors since 2019, but the Red Sox could move him there at Abreu's expense, or perhaps Jarren Duran could move to right. While the 24-year-old Abreu showed promise in a small sample in the majors last season, the whiffs might push him to a bench role or back to the minors to begin 2024.

  • Red Sox's Justin Slaten: Makes roster

The Red Sox informed Slaten on Sunday that he's made the Opening Day roster, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

The right-hander was traded to the Red Sox after being selected by the Mets during the Rule 5 Draft in December, so he'll need to stay on the major-league roster all season or he'll revert back to the Rangers. Slaten spent most of last season at the Double-A level and had a 3.16 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 76:16 K:BB across 51.1 innings, though he also received a late-season look at Triple-A.

  • Red Sox's Joely Rodriguez: Nabs roster spot

Rodriguez was informed Sunday that he made the Red Sox's Opening Day roster, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Rodriguez re-signed with Boston as a non-roster invitee in February, and he pitched well during camp with a 2.57 ERA and 9:3 K:BB over seven innings. The left-hander was limited to 11 outings last season due to a hip injury.
