State of Georgia names design finalists for six large capital projects

The state of Georgia has named design finalists for six big university projects that will cost an estimated $136 million or more.

The major capital projects include enhancing agricultural facilities at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton; a nursing and health science simulation lab facility at Albany State University in Albany; renovation to academic buildings and campus infrastructure at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley; phase one of a poultry science complex at The University of Georgia in Athens; the renovation of a humanities building and infrastructure improvements at University of West Georgia in Carrollton; and a performing arts center at Valdosta State University in Valdosta.

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia is scheduled to review the finalists at its Jan. 12 meeting.

The finalists for the enhancement of agricultural facilities at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College are:

The finalists for the nursing and health science simulation lab facility at Albany State University are:

The finalists for the renovation of a humanities building and infrastructure improvements at University of West Georgia are:

The finalists for the performing arts center at Valdosta State University are:

  2. Cogdell & Mendrala Architects, P.C., w/ H3, Savannah/New York
  3. McMillan Pazdan Smith, LLC, Atlanta

The Abraham Baldwin project has a total project cost of $14.4 million. The project includes the renovation of 22,215 square feet and the buildout of 28,000 square feet of newly constructed space. The renovation will create specialized labs to support smaller-scale equipment and materials utilized in agriculture, technology, forestry, and agricultural education programs. New classrooms, offices, and other support areas will also be added to the space.

The Albany State University project has a total project cost of $10 million. It involves the construction of a new facility totaling approximately 20,000 square feet that will provide a comprehensive advanced simulation center for nursing and allied health instruction.

The project at Fort Valley State University has a total project cost of $14.3 million. It involves the renovation and repurposing of historic Davison Hall, a 26,560-square foot student residential facility that is currently vacant. In addition to conversion of the facility to instruction and related support uses, the project also provides for construction of a 5,400-square-foot building for heating and air conditioning infrastructure.

The project at The University of Georgia has a total project cost of $54.1 million. It involves the construction of a state-of-the-art poultry science complex totaling approximately 75,000 square feet.

The project at University of West Georgia has a total project cost of $31.8 million. It involves the renovation of the University of West Georgia’s Humanities Building.

The Valdosta State University project has a total project cost of $18.7 million. It involves construction of a performance arts center encompassing approximately 40,000 square feet, which will contain state-of-the-art performance spaces anchored by a proscenium theater with approximately 350 seats, a fly loft, wings, and an orchestra pit.
