SOUTH BOUND BROOK, N.J. (WCBS 880) — More than 100 cats found living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions have been rescued from a home in New Jersey.
Police and animal control officers from St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center showed up at the home in South Bound Brook after a neighbor called to complain about a foul odor coming from the residence.
When they arrived at the house, they discovered dozens of cats and kittens, which were removed from the home over a three-day rescue operation starting Wednesday.
"It is gut-wrenching to see so many cats and kittens living in filthy, poor conditions," said Chris Schindler, Vice President of Field Services for St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center. "We are grateful to the South Bound Brook Police Department for answering the call to help these animals."
The resident of the home surrendered custody of the cats to St. Hubert's.
The animals are now being cared for and assessed at shelters in Madison and Ledgewood.
Some of the cats are suffering from malnutrition, upper respiratory infections and other ailments.
The investigation is ongoing.
St. Hubert's said, "More cats and kittens will be removed as animal control officers continue to sift through household items and debris that is piled up inside the home."
The cats will later be put up for adoption. This interested should visit sthuberts.org.
