The rapper Pitbull is opening a charter elementary school this week in Tempe, Ariz., that will focus on STEM subjects and sports.
SLAM! Arizona Elementary, a K-5 school, is situated in Tempe because of its proximity to pro sports teams and universities, azcentral.com reports.
The Tempe location also enables the school to cater to students in difficult economic situations. The school will provide school supplies for students who need them, as well as a washer and dryer for families to do laundry.
SLAM stands for science, leadership, arts and management. The school focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum and sports themes to prepare students for careers in sports medicine, media production and marketing.
The charter school is leasing the former Esperanza Community School site. Down the road, SLAM hopes to build its own campus that can accommodate more children.
At first, it will enroll 120 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The school will add one grade each year, with plans to expand through 12th grade.
SLAM also has locations in Nevada and Georgia.
