Research Grants

Researcher–Practitioner Collaboration Grant

Supports collaborative studies that will increase knowledge to improve services for individuals with communication disorders.

  • For: Partnerships of researchers (with a PhD or equivalent research doctorate in CSD or related discipline) and practitioners (with a degree in audiology, speech-language pathology or related field)
  • Award: Up to four grants of $35,000 for each team
  • Deadline: April 17, 2024

New Century Scholars Research Grant

Supports innovative studies that foster new research ideas and directions for investigators, and that will advance knowledge, tools, and techniques in communication sciences and disorders.

  • For: Researchers (with a PhD or equivalent research doctorate in CSD)
  • Award: Up to four grants of $25,000 each
  • Deadline: April 17, 2024

New Investigators Research Grant

Supports new investigators by funding preliminary studies that could launch larger-scale research investigations.

  • For: Researchers (with a PhD or equivalent research doctorate earned within past five years)
  • Award: Up to 10 grants of $10,000 each
  • Deadline: April 17, 2024

Speech Science Research Grant

Supports studies by new investigators pursuing research in speech science.

  • For: Researchers (with a PhD or equivalent research doctorate earned within past five years)
  • Award: One grant of $10,000
  • Deadline: April 17, 2024

Student Research Grant in Audiology

Supports student research studies in clinical and/or rehabilitative audiology.

  • For: Students (enrolled full time in doctoral (research or clinical) degree programs in audiology or hearing science in the U.S.)
  • Award: Up to three grants of $2,000 each
  • Deadline: April 17, 2024

Student Research Grant in Early Childhood Language Development

Supports student research studies in early childhood language development.

  • For: Students (enrolled full time in master's or doctoral (research or clinical) degree programs in speech-language pathology or speech-language science in the U.S.)
  • Award: Up to three grants of $2,000 each
  • Deadline: April 17, 2024

Clinical Research Grant

Advances knowledge of treatment efficacy and assessment practices. When applying for a Clinical Research Grant, applicants will be able to choose one of the three support options listed below, depending on the type of research study.

  • For: Researchers (with a PhD or equivalent research doctorate in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) or related discipline)
  • Award: Up to four grants of $50,000–$75,000 each
  • Deadline: Next program will be offered in 2025
Mentored Research Studies
For new investigators, especially post-docs, who will actively work with a mentor.
Independent Research Studies
For investigators early in their careers who are developing an independent research record or for experienced researchers who are pursuing a new effort.
Collaborative Research Studies
For mid-career investigators, who may have an extensive research history, who will collaborate with other investigators.

Scholarships

New Century Scholars Doctoral Scholarship

Supports doctoral students committed to a teacher-investigator career in the U.S.

  • For: Students (enrolled in, or accepted to, a research doctoral program (PhD or equivalent) in CSD)
  • Award: Up to 15 scholarships of $10,000 each
  • Deadline: May 15, 2024

Graduate Student Scholarship

Supports CSD graduate students who demonstrate academic achievement and promise.

  • For: Students (who are undergraduate seniors accepted to a master’s program or students currently pursuing master’s or doctoral (research or clinical) degrees)
  • Award: Up to 15 scholarships of $5,000 each
  • Deadline: May 22, 2024

When applying for the Graduate Student Scholarship, you will be able to indicate if you would also like to be considered for the following scholarship categories. You are able to apply for any that you are eligible for, but you will receive a maximum of one award.

International Student Scholarship
For international students studying in the United States. (Only non-U.S. citizens are eligible.)
Minority Student Scholarship
For students who are members of a racial or ethnic minority group and are U.S. citizens.
NSSLHA Scholarship
For undergraduate senior students with active National NSSLHA memberships and who will begin graduate study in the fall.
Student With a Disability Scholarship
For students with a disability.

Clinical Achievement Awards

Frank R. Kleffner Lifetime Clinical Career Award

Honors an individual's outstanding contributions to CSD over a period of at least 20 years.

  • For: Clinicians (who have contributed to clinical service, supervision or administration of clinical service, clinical research, or any other activity that has promoted clinical excellence over a lifetime)
  • Award: Commemorative art object
  • Deadline: April 10, 2024

State Clinical Achievement Awards and Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement

Recognize a significant accomplishment in clinical practice within the past six years in audiology and/or speech-language pathology.

  • For: Clinicians (who have made a single, specific, well-defined achievement)
  • Award: $2,500
  • Deadline: April 10, 2024

Rolland J. Van Hattum Award for Contribution in the Schools

Recognizes an individual's exemplary commitment and contribution to the delivery of audiology and/or speech-language pathology services within a school setting.

  • For: Clinicians (audiologists or speech-language pathologists employed by a school system)
  • Award: $2,500
  • Deadline: April 10, 2024
