Animal Law

We are staunchly committed to developing the field of animal law. More trained advocates interested and equipped to challenge systems of animal abuse means a swifter end to these cruel industries.

While the field of animal law is growing, there are unfortunately not enough jobs and opportunities for the large number of people interested in practicing in this area. As such, we endeavor to create more opportunities for law students and attorneys practicing in other fields to gain experience and knowledge through internships, pro bono engagements, volunteer work, special projects, and mentoring.

Our current opportunities are listed below, but feel free to contact us at info@animalpartisan.org if you have ideas on other forms of engagement.

Law Students

STATUS: We are no longer accepting applications for Summer 2024 internships. We will begin accepting applications for Fall 2024 internships on May 1, 2024.

We accept applications for legal internships on an ongoing basis and offer between two and four internships each semester during the spring, summer, and fall. Internships are remote and unpaid.

Our goal is to develop legal interns into future animal lawyers. As such, legal interns are an integral part of our work, helping create and develop new legal actions as well as supporting existing cases. Interns may work on legal research and writing, drafting enforcement letters, conducting factual research on potential targets, writing and submitting public records requests, and supporting existing cases. Interns may engage with a wide range of legal subject areas, including torts, criminal law, administrative law, constitutional law, environmental law, securities law, and a number of others. Interns are expected to commit at least 8 hours/week during the spring and fall semesters and 40 hours/week during the summer.

Current law students with a passion for animal issues should submit (1) a cover letter, (2) resume, (3) current transcript, (4) writing sample, and (5) three references to info@animalpartisan.org. Please indicate which semester you would like to intern. Application materials should be combined into a single package.

Law Schools and Student Groups

We welcome opportunities to collaborate with law school student groups, student pro bono programs, and clinics. We can generally craft these engagements to the needs of the group and and projects can take almost any form. Some possibilities include:

  • Supervision of a student group focused on an animal law-related research and writing project

  • Presentation to, meeting with, or mentoring an animal law student group

  • Participation in an animal law-related conference or panel

  • Partnership with an individual student on an animal law-related class assignment

Given the breadth of our work, it usually is not difficult to create a project that will benefit our mission and align with the goals of the student, program, or clinic. We invite you to reach out for a brief discussion on how we might partner.

Law schools or student groups interested to collaborate can simply email us at info@animalpartisan.org.

Practicing Attorneys

We welcome assistance from practicing attorneys from all fields who are interested in working on animal law matters. Whether you’re looking to litigate a case pro bono or just to develop animal law knowledge through research and writing, we can probably find a project for you and would be glad to hear from you.
