Some Georgia technical colleges remaining closed Friday

At least three of Georgia’s technical colleges will remain closed Friday as the state continues to recover from Tropical Storm Zeta.

West Georgia Technical College, which serves students in seven counties, will be closed due to widespread power outages in its service area. Both campuses of Gwinnett Technical College and all eight campuses of Chattahoochee Technical College will also be closed.

Hurricane Zeta, which made landfall in Louisiana Wednesday afternoon had weakened to a tropical storm by the time it reached Georgia early Thursday. The fast-moving storm brought wind gusts of more than 50 mph in parts of Georgia, leaving downed trees and massive power outages in its wake.

The storm also led to three deaths in the state when trees fell on homes in Cherokee and Gwinnett counties.

Early Thursday, about a million people were without power in Georgia. The outages and tree debris caused many colleges, including Georgia Tech and Clayton State universities, to delay opening or cancel operations Thursday.

Within the state’s technical college system, Georgia Northwestern and Lanier technical colleges which were closed Thursday, will reopen for regular operations on Friday.
