World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium
Recognizing and reaffirming the educational rights of all Indigenous peoples

The World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC) was established in August 2002 at the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education (WIPCE) in Alberta, Canada. WINHEC’s aim is to bring professionals together to achieve common goals through higher education. Members come from many different countries and a variety of diverse areas such as university departments, research organizations and government agencies.

WINHEC Circle of Honours

The WINHEC Executive Co-Chairs are pleased to announce the ‘CALL for WINHEC Circle of Honours’ that advances WINHEC’s Mission and Goals, to:

  1. Recognise the significance of Indigenous education and the educational rights of Indigenous Peoples;
  2. Accelerate the articulation of Indigenous epistemologies (ways of knowing, education, philosophy, and research); and
  3. Protect and enhance Indigenous spiritual beliefs, cultures and languages through higher education.

We are so happy to announce that the registration for the upcoming 2024 Hawai'i Coolangatta Symposium is now open.  This event will convene at the Kamehameha Schools Hawai'i Campus at Kea'au from March 20-23, 2024. Attendance is limited, so please register right away. You can register a group or forward the postcard to others who are willing to engage in indigenous educational policy setting.

WINU Announcement

The Board of the World Indigenous Nations University (WINU) has ended the appointments of Trevor Moeke and Rongo Wetere as Chancellor and Vice Chancellor respectively. They no longer represent the World Indigenous Nations University in any capacity. Any communications should be directed to winuenquiries@gmail.com. We extend a sincere appreciation to Dr Wetere and Dr Moeke for their leadership in helping to establish the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium which will stand as an historical benchmark in First People’s Engagement in Higher Education. We wish them well in their future endeavours.

HONORARY DOCTORATES

In the spirit of Hope and a Vision for a Better Future to come, the WINU Executive Committee, in conjunction with the WINHEC Executive Co-Chairs, invite nominations for the WINU Honorary Doctorates. And in furtherance of the principles and intent of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the WINU Executive Committee call upon WINU and WINHEC Member Countries and their Indigenous education support networks to nominate eligible individuals for the WINU Honorary Doctorates that are described here. This also includes the awarding of Posthumous Honorary Doctorates for outstanding and significant achievements to individuals who have worked tirelessly and contributed significantly to Indigenous Rights and Indigenous knowledges in any of the WINHEC member countries or other Indigenous nations.

In line with our traditional protocols, we pay respect to the Indigenous Elders and Traditional Owners, present and past, and we bring greetings from member institutions across the globe, Indigenous Elders and knowledge holders who have been the inspirational foundations of WINHEC as an international Indigenous Higher Education Consortium. On behalf of the Executive Committee we extend sincere appreciation for the opportunity to participate in this historic forum.
