WAYCROSS, Ga. (WGXA) -- On February 1st South Georgia State College (SGSC) will have a new president on campus.

On January 26th, the USG Chancellor, Sonny Perdue, named Dr. Gregory M. Tanner interim president of the college. The opportunity presented itself following the USG Board of Regents naming SGSC President Ingrid Thompson-Sellers president of Atlanta Metropolitan State College.

Tanner is very familiar with the educational system. He first came to what was then, South Georgia College in 2012 as dean of students. Currently, he serves as SGSC’s vice president for advancement, government relations, and athletics.

Prior to SGSC Tanner served as a school principal for elementary and high schools in Douglas, Ware Shoals, and Nicholls. He also led ABAC to a softball championship in the 1995 National Junior College Athletic Association.

Tanner was awarded his name in ABAC's Hall of Fame as the Georgia Region XVII Softball Coach of the Year. He's earned several degrees, a bachelor's in education, a master's in physical education, and education leadership, and a doctorate in educational leadership and supervision.

Anticipating the transition into his next professional expedition, Tanner said, "I’m grateful for this opportunity and will work with SGSC’s students, faculty, and staff to celebrate their accomplishments, support them in times of struggles and give them a place they can call home.”

“It’s an honor to help lead a college that has been so integral to the workforce and well-being of our communities in South Georgia,” Tanner said.
