Community Art Project

The West Windsor Arts Council and the African American Parent Support Group invites the greater West Windsor and Plainsboro community to participate in a community art project. No art experience necessary! Everyone has a seat at the table and everyone’s voice is important!

A dedication ceremony was held outside at the West Windsor Arts Center

Saturday, October 17 at 11:00 a.m.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in this project! We will continue to accept new squares and add them as we get enough to make a new strand.

Please view the finished flag installation anytime, outdoors at the West Windsor Arts Center.

What? Inspired by Tibetan Prayer Flags, we will create our own community flag installation at the West Windsor Arts Center setting intentions for an anti-racist society and marking the Art Center as an anti-racist institution.

Who? All community members are invited to participate and make squares for the flags. You do not need to sign your flag, and all flags with good intentions will be included. Messages of hate will not be tolerated.

Where? The flags will be displayed outdoors at the West Windsor Arts Center beginning October 11th, 2020.

How?

  1. Pick up a fabric square from the box next to the Little Free Library at the West Windsor Arts Center anytime.
  2. Or, make your own. Each square must be 12 inches by 12 inches. It does not need to be hemmed. The fabric should have a dominant color of either blue, white, red, green, or yellow. Feel free to make more than one square.
  3. Using permanent markers (like Sharpie), acrylic paint, or other materials use your fabric square to set intentions for an anti-racist society. Make drawings or write stories that will help to illustrate your ideas.

Some ideas to consider:

  • Share a personal story of racism or anti-racism.
  • Make a portrait or tell a story of an African American historical figure or personal hero.
  • Address a community need.
