What is VFRC?

Vermont’s Free & Referral Clinics (VFRC) is an association of nine clinics that provide free healthcare services to all Vermonters regardless of income, immigration status, gender, sexual orientation, language, and more. The clinics provide a range of support with health insurance and other state programs, as well as care coordination, assistance accessing free or low-cost prescriptions, and transportation. Five clinics offer free medical, dental, and mental health services.

While our doors are open to anyone, VFRC and its members’ history is rooted in reducing barriers to accessing care for marginalized Vermonters, particularly those un- or underinsured. VFRC supports the free and referral clinics through funding, advocacy, and data management.

Celebrating 25 Years of Service to Vermont

Founded in 1995, Vermont’s Free & Referral Clinics (VFRC) – formerly known as the Vermont Coalition of Clinics for the Uninsured (VCCU) – marked its 25th anniversary in 2020. VFRC supports the work of its nine member programs, which are located in Barre, Bennington, Burlington, Middlebury, Randolph, Rutland, Springfield, Windsor, and White River Junction.

Making a Difference

In 2022 VFRC Members Provided:

  • Care to 13,472 patients, 4,698 of whom were new
  • Care to Vermonters from 232 towns across the state
  • $6.6 million of free medication

The value of these services in avoided Emergency Room and hospitalization charges is an estimated $7.9 million.
