We are a cancer biology lab with a research focus on 1. Brain tumors and 2. Extrachromosomal oncogene DNA amplification. In particular, we study the process of tumor evolution and therapy resistance. We use high-throughput sequencing, computational analysis and functional studies in our research.

Now closed: We are looking for a lab manager

The Verhaak lab is looking for a new lab manager. We are a group of approximately 12 scientists, who are performing both wet lab as well as dry lab research. Our lab manager makes sure that our wet lab is able to operate effectively and efficiently. [Read More]

Now closed: postdoc opportunity - machine learning methods for high-content image screens

The Verhaak lab is looking to recruit a postdoctoral associate who will help us develop analytical approaches for high-content imaging screen data sets. The ideal candidate has experience with machine learning and cancer biology. Previous work with high-throughput approaches is desirable. First author peer-reviewed papers are required. [Read More]

Now closed: Postdoc opportunity – wet lab – extrachromosomal DNA

Update 08/03/2023: Position has been filled.
The Verhaak lab is looking to recruit a postdoctoral associate who will help us understand how oncogenic extrachromosomal DNA elements contribute to tumor evolution. The ideal candidate has experience with functional interrogation of cell line models via genetic engineering approaches and cancer biology. Previous work with high-throughput approaches is desirable. First author peer-reviewed papers are required. [Read More]

Verhaak lab moves to Yale Department of Neurosurgery - wet and dry lab job openings available!

The Verhaak lab is moving from the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, to the Yale School of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery. We are excited to work closely with our new colleagues towards a cure for brain cancer. Most lab members, our grants and our projects are moving with us, and studies of extrachromosomal DNA will continue to be a major part of our research. To kick start exciting new ideas, we are looking for dry lab researchers AND wet lab researchers (graduate students, postdoctoral associates/fellows, associate research scientists). [Read More]

Fred Varn joins JAX Genomic Medicine faculty

Postdoctoral fellow Fred Varn has accepted an offer to join the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, CT, as an assistant professor. Fred started his tenure in the Verhaak lab in 2018 following the completion of a PhD at Dartmouth University. He picked up a fellowship from the Jane Coffins Childs Foundation in 2019, and focused his research on understanding cellular tumor evolution in glioma, through analysis of GLASS datasets. Amongst others, Fred is the first author of the 2022 GLASS publication in Cell. Congratulations Fred, we are happy and excited for you! [Read More]
