Household Hazardous Waste

KC Water operates a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility and program to help protect area streams and rivers and keep hazardus materials out of landfills. HHW offers a safe method for residents of Kansas City and area participating communities to remove hazardous waste from homes. Accepted items are listed below.

Hazardous Waste Drop-Off
Professionals at the facility safely accept, process, recycle, make available for reuse, or properly discard hazardous household products. Deliver items at HHW’s weather-protected drive-through portico. For safety, do not leave your vehicle; professional staff will greet you and safely remove items.

Drop-Off Hours of Operation
Wednesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. – For loads over 600 pounds. By appointment only. Call 816-513-8400 to schedule.
Thursday-Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. – For loads less than 600 pounds.
Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. – For loads less than 600 pounds.

Swap Shop
Items collected that are reusable are available to the public at no charge. Reusable products often collected include paint, household cleaners, lawn chemicals, and motor oil, among others. Inventory can vary daily, so call 816-513-8400 to learn if we have what you need.

Terms and Conditions

  • No charge for residents of Kansas City, Mo., and participating communities (see list below).
  • Customers must provide proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill.
  • Loads in excess of 600 pounds are accepted only on Wednesdays and only by appointment. Call 816-513-8400 to schedule.
  • No appointment necessary for loads weighing less than 600 pounds.
  • KC Water is not permitted to accept hazardous waste from businesses or organizations, including churches, schools, government entities, nonprofit organizations, home-based businesses, and materials used to maintain rental properties.

  • Automotive fluids (antifreeze, motor oil, etc.)
  • Batteries
  • Light bulbs, including compact fluorescent (CFL), U-shaped fluorescent, and halogen
  • Cooking oil
  • Corrosive cleaners
  • Hazardous liquids
  • Household cleaners
  • Lawn and garden products
  • Mercury: elemental mercury or any items containing mercury
  • Paint
  • Pesticides/insecticides
  • Photographic chemicals
  • Pool chemicals

Items Not Accepted

  • Appliances
  • Asbestos
  • Containers larger than five gallons
  • Explosives, ammunitions and fireworks
  • Fire extinguishers (Contact this company for a fire extinguisher disposal option.)
  • Medical waste and needles
  • Prescription drugs (Visit here for a map of pharmaceutical take-back and safe disposal locations.)
  • Propane bottles weighing over one pound, fire extinguishers, butane and Freon
  • Tires (Visit here for a tire recycling option.)
  • Yard waste (Visit here for City of Kansas City, Mo., leaf and brush drop-off locations, information, and rules.)

2024 Mobile Events
To reduce customer travel and make it convenient to dispose of hazardous waste properly, KC Water’s Household Hazardous Waste team supports collections at the below locations on the Saturday dates indicated from 8 a.m.-noon unless otherwise indicated. Residents of Kansas City, Mo., and any community listed below may bring household hazardous waste to any mobile collection event listed. Bring proof of residency (e.g., driver’s license, utility bill, tax bill, etc.). Household hazardous waste listed as accepted above is accepted at all mobile collection events. To verify waste being collected at any event, call 816-513-8400.
