Contact Scheduling Coordinator and Intern Director for approval. May not be used on holidays, ICU shifts or the last 2 weeks of internship. 80 hours of PTO is not accrued but available at start. Interns who go over 80 hours for personal reasons/family emergencies, may be asked to complete additional days following internship end date in order to make up.

Additional Information about this Program
We are unable to consider applications from candidates that would require an H-1B or other similar type visa to be able to work in the United States. All applicants must have completed a veterinary program in a U.S. or AVMA accredited program and be eligible for licensure in Arizona. Candidates with a TN visa are welcomed to apply.AVECCC Peoria is a segment of Canyon State Veterinary Specialists in Peoria, AZ with specialists in emergency and critical care, surgery, internal medicine, radiology, cardiology, and dentistry. Arizona Regional, Intensive Care, Specialty & Emergency (ARISE) Veterinary Center is an extension of our sister hospitals, AVECCC Gilbert and AVECCC Peoria. Interns will rotate through all three locations, with the majority of their time spent in Gilbert.AVECCC Gilbert, the primary site of the internship, is a level 1 VECCS certified facility that boasts an outstanding caseload and case complexity, excellent training for individuals seeking a well-rounded experience preparing for diverse opportunities post-internship training. Interns work alongside 6 ACVECC diplomates in a closed ICU that serves as the hub of the hospital. Interns have primary case responsibility with frequent consultations and collaborations with allied specialists. Interns participate in the training of rotating veterinary student externs. AVECCC works closely with the nearby neurology clinic and residents, sharing numerous complex cases and participating in joint rounds.Our progressive ECC service provides dialysis and therapeutic plasma exchange services, and interns will have significant involvement with these cases as the internship progresses. The surgical team provides all routine and most of the emergency surgeries, however, interns will be encouraged to become comfortable with routine emergency surgeries (tracheostomy, GDV, splenectomy, gastrotomy, enterotomy, C-section, laceration repair, etc.) with supervision by a DACVECC or emergency clinician with advanced training. The criticalists share responsibility with the surgical team for placement and troubleshooting of SUBs on an emergency basis.We are seeking highly motivated candidates with an excellent attitude, who strive for clinical excellence and have a strong desire to become skilled in emergency and critical care. Numerous of our past interns have accepted residencies including in ECC, surgery or radiology, or have elected to dedicate their careers to ECC. Over 70% of our highly skilled emergency doctors have completed this internship and elected to stay on staff. They provide excellent mentorship for incoming interns and most participate in our formal intern mentorship program.

AVECCC is located at Arizona Veterinary Specialists which houses multiple specialties including cardiology, internal medicine, radiology, dentistry, dermatology, ophthalmology, and oncology. We have an internal medicine specialist, anesthesiologist and board certified surgeon at our Queen Creek facility (ARISE Veterianry Center). Students are also encouraged to reach out to the surrounding area and even out of state to complete elective rotations in areas that they have interest.

Extensive diagnostic and treatment capabilities are available as anticipated in a facility dedicated to providing the highest quality of emergency and critical care including an in-house laboratory (CBC, biochemistry, blood gases, coagulation analyzer), basic and advanced monitoring equipment (DBP/IDBP, ETCO2, CVP, ECG, pulse oximetry), anesthetic and 3 long-term ventilators (including new state of the art Maquet Servo-u), high flow nasal oxygen unit, defibrillator/external pacing, digital radiography with remote viewing access, 3 ECC ultrasound units including cardiac, linear and microconvex probes, echocardiography, fluoroscopy, endoscopy/bronchoscopy, 64 slice CT, stereotactic radiation, Prismaflex for CRRT/TPE with CritLine IV and Prismaflo blood warmer and onsite blood bank. Importantly, the equipment is in use frequently providing 48 patients mechanical ventilation and 52 CRRT/TPE treatments in the past 12 months. The critical care team is committed to teaching strong evidence-based medicine via comprehensive daily cage side rounds, weekly didactic rounds consisting of journal club, weekly topic seminars, morbidity & mortality rounds, and house officer presentations.
