Liver-Related Work

Clinical and Research Interests: I am an Anatomic Surgical Pathologist within the Division of Gastrointestinal Pathology Center of Excellence. My clinical responsibilities include the pathologic evaluation of pancreatobiliary and hepatocellular diseases and neoplasms. In addition, I am involved in the development of clinical molecular diagnostic tests for the early detection of malignancies involving the hepatopancreatobiliary tract and pancreatic/biliary cysts. My research is supported by grants from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), National Pancreas Foundation (NPF), and the University of Pittsburgh.
Ongoing Research Studies:
  1. In collaboration with Drs. George Michalopoulos and Michael Nalesnik, we are examining the genetics of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) to identify prognostic molecular markers. This project also involves the creation of a large set of tissue microarrays (TMAs) of HCCs obtained through the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) hospital system.
  2. In collaboration with the Division of Molecular and Genomic Pathology, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and Division of Surgical Oncology, we have developed and optimized a molecular test for bile duct brushings and pancreatic cysts for the early detection of malignancies involving the hepatopancreatobiliary tract. These projects are funded by PanCAN and the University of Pittsburgh.
  3. In collaboration with the Division of Surgical Oncology, we are exploring the genetics of neuroendocrine neoplasms of the gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary system and identifying predictive molecular markers for distant liver metastases. This project is funded by the NPF.

Research Services: I am responsible for creation of numerous tissue microarrays of HCCs, cholangiocarcinomas (both intrahepatic and extrahepatic), pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas, ampullary/small intestinal adenocarcinomas, and neuroendocrine neoplasms. I also provide pathologic support for studies initiated by the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and Division of Surgical Oncology that include collection and processing of tissues and fluids from biopsy/surgical specimens, pathologic interpretation, immunohistochemical studies, and molecular analysis.
