Position description

The Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/vchs/) is committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body invites applications for clinicians and researchers.

This position represents a NIH funded Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) program faculty hire to UC San Diego. Through the FIRST program, we seek to recruit a cohort of diverse faculty who have a demonstrated strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusive excellence in health related fields of cancer, cardiovascular sciences, immunology, infectious diseases and neurosciences.

Through these hires, UC San Diego and UC San Diego Health Sciences aim to enhance our academic and research missions and establish inclusive environments to help new hires succeed. Candidates will present any previous experience having served as a role model in mentoring others. In addition to the highest standards of scholarship, teaching, and professional activity, successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to promoting inclusive excellence and help shape and expand the University’s diversity initiatives (http://diversity.ucsd.edu/).

The selected candidate(s) will receive competitive startup packages to support salary and research start-up costs. Candidates may not have held a prior assistant professor position.

The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor rank. Series will include Ladder Rank.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

Candidates selected for a Health Sciences appointment: As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Candidates must have an MD or equivalent, DO, MD/PhD, PhD, PharmD, DrPH or other doctoral degrees in health related, bioengineering, biological sciences, cancer, cardiovascular sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, immunology, infectious diseases, marine sciences, neurosciences, or social science/cognitive sciences.

Candidates with an MD or equivalent and DO must be board certified/board eligible in their area of specialty. Candidates with an MD must have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.

  • Statement of Teaching - No more than 2 pages

  • Statement of Contributions to Diversity - no more than 2 pages - A personal diversity and leadership statement should summarize a candidate’s engagement and contributions to inclusion of underrepresented voices in higher education, healthcare or society and underline any leadership activities undertaken inside or outside the university. Contribution to diversity statements could include an attention to diverse learning needs, engaging learning fields of diverse communities, pedagogical methods that address learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds, an awareness of inequities in education, research, or clinical environment. A track record of specific activities that address and mitigate inequities, follow-up of positive impact on under-represented students, and a specific plan of activities and follow-up at UCSD.
