Award Details
Designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders, Schwarzman Scholars is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. Whether in politics, business or science, the success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China’s role in global trends.
The program allows students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and professional networks through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most distinguished universities.
Students live and study together on the campus of Schwarzman College and all classes are taught in English. Students earn a degree in Global Affairs.
Schwarzman Scholars spend a year immersed in an international community of thinkers, innovators and senior leaders in business, politics and society. In an environment of intellectual engagement, professional development and cultural exchange, they learn from one another and pursue their academic disciplines while building their leadership capacities.

- Undergraduate degree must be completed before orientation begins. Applicants from any field are welcome.
- Candidates must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years of age as of August 1 of their Schwarzman Scholars enrollment year (for the Class of 2024-2025, as of August 1, 2024).
- English language proficiency
- Northeastern University endorsement
Schwarzman Scholars will be selected on the basis of not only their academic aptitude and intellectual ability, but also their leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, ability to anticipate paradigm changes, exemplary character, and desire to understand other cultures, perspectives and positions.
The scholarship will include:
- Tuition Fees
- Room and board
- Travel to and from Beijing at the beginning and end of the academic year
- An in-country study tour
- Required course books and supplies
- Lenovo laptop and smartphone
- Health insurance
- A personal stipend of $3,500
To apply to the Schwarzman Scholarship, you will need to submit a completed application by the internal deadline for the review of Northeastern Internal Endorsement Committee. While applicants are free to apply at-large, we strongly encourage applicants to seek Northeastern’s nomination and avail themselves of our Undergraduate Research and Fellowship office’s assistance.
The application elements are:
- An application form that includes a Biographical Profile, a Resume/Curriculum Vitae, a Video Introduction, an indication of Interests, details of relevant educational information, work experiences, leadership roles, experience abroad.
- Two essays and two short answer responses. The two required essays are a Leadership Essay (750 words) and a Statement of Purpose (500 words). The essays are a critical component of the application, designed to help the selection committee understand you as an individual and get a sense of your demonstrated leadership abilities and potential, as well as your writing and analytical skills. Detailed descriptions of what is expected from each essay are included on the prompt of the application form. Essays can be uploaded as PDF or Word document. The two Short Answer responses have a 100-word limit each. Word counts are strict and any essays that exceed the limits may be disqualified. Footnotes, headers, and titles all count towards an essay’s total word count.
- Three recommendations. DO NOT solicit these through the Schwarzman application site. Instead register these references on the Internal Northeastern Fellowship Portal.
- An official Northeastern University transcript
- A short video self-introduction of no more than 1 minute. Introduce yourself in any style or setting you think best conveys your interests and personality. The point of this recording is to allow the committee to hear you introduce yourself in your own voice and style.
Complete all elements of the application on the official Schwarzman application site but DO NOT solicit letters of reference there. Upload all of the application materials to Northeastern’s Internal Fellowship Application Portal.
