The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT) is a teaching program of the Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research on the campus of the University of Michigan.
2024 Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques Diversity Fellowship
The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT) is committed to advancing the University’s Diversity, Equity and, Inclusion goals. The 6th Annual Diversity Fellowship Program was offered as part of the 2024 Summer Institute program. This opportunity consisted of a two-week program (June 17-28, 2024) geared toward upper-level undergraduates from the University of Michigan and other colleges and institutions from around the country. Applicants who are considering graduate school in quantitative social science fields will be given strong preference. This program will provide a broad overview of the field of survey methodology. We hope the program will encourage interest in graduate studies in the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science.
The 2024 Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques Diversity Fellowship Program will take place June 17-28, 2024 from 1:00pm-4:00pm Eastern Standard Time. We will have the 2024 final schedule available soon. All courses will be offered in an alternative remote format.
Candidates should be an undergraduate and meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Come from educational, cultural or geographic backgrounds that are underrepresented in survey methodology in the United States or the University of Michigan;
- Have demonstrated sustained commitment to diversity in the academic, professional, or civic realm through their work experience, volunteer engagement, or leadership of student or community organizations to reduce social, educational or economic disparities; and/or
- Have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances.
- Will be the first generation in their families to graduate from a 4-year college.
This two-week program has been developed by the Institute for Social Research (ISR) to support the University of Michigan’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative. The goal is to focus our efforts on recruiting upper-level undergraduates from underrepresented groups who are interested in pursuing graduate school in quantitative social science fields. Please complete the 2024 SISRT DEI fellowship application by May, 25, 2024.
Following participation in the SISRT Diversity Fellowship Program, we will invite the best and the brightest to visit our Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) graduate program in person during the Fall term 2024 through a travel grant. Each Fellow will be considered for this travel grant and will be selected based on the following:
- Undergraduate study background
- Participation and engagement in the SISRT Diversity Fellowship Program
- Final research paper
The grant will cover transportation to and from Ann Arbor (flight & ground), 2 nights stay in Ann Arbor, and meals during stay.
The visit is meant to provide interested students with an opportunity to attend MPSDS classes that will increase their exposure to graduate studies, meet with faculty and current students in MPSDS, and spend time on campus to get a sense of if the University of Michigan and the surrounding communities in Ann Arbor would be a suitable place for graduate school experiences.
Week 1 and 2: Survey and Data Science for Undergraduates and Informational and Research Presentations Monday-Friday June 17-28, 2024, 1:00pm-4:00EST.
This program will introduce the science behind survey research. Our primary goal is to share our excitement about survey methodology as a research field. In this course, we focus on principles and theories as opposed to a strictly hands on approach to creating surveys. Along with informational seminars on the Institute for Social Research, Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science with a special focus on presentations from expert research faculty from within the Institute in the social science fields. The final day of the program will be reserved for participants to present a final project.
Fellowship recipients will receive funding to cover fees for enrollment in specified Summer Institute coursework (not for credit).
Early submission of application and supplementary materials is encouraged. There are a limited number of fellowships available, and they will be awarded to qualified applicants as completed applications are reviewed.
To maximize the size of our cohort and provide the best possible experience for all, it is important that each applicant be committed to attend this educational opportunity. To this end, if you are selected for the fellowship, your written acceptance of the offer with a deposit of $50 is required to secure the fellowship in the 2023 Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques Diversity Fellowship program. If you choose to withdraw after May 15, 2024, the $50 deposit is non-refundable. If you attend the program, your deposit will be refunded upon completion of the program.
