TLA’s Town Hall Meeting to discuss the LSO Family Law Service Provider Proposal: Should non lawyers practice family Law?

Following the Law Society’s Access to Justice Committee proposal Family Legal Services Provider (FLSP) Licensing model, the TLA would like to invite you to a Town Hall Meeting to discuss the proposal, on Wednesday, September 16th, 2020.

The TLA is concerned that the LSO proposal:

  1. Fails to protect the public from unqualified practitioners;
  2. Fails to make a business case that Family Law Service Providers will fill the gap of providing access to justice for Ontarians with modest incomes;
  3. Will force family lawyers out of business  which will harm diversity efforts in the legal profession;
  4. Diverts resources and energies away from actions that would promote access to justice for Ontarians needing family law services such as:
    1. Facilitating the licensing of foreign trained lawyers to practice family law;
    2. Expanding Pro Bono Ontario services to include family law;
    3. Expanding Legal Aid services in family law;
    4. Imposing a levy on all lawyers (not just family lawyers), proportionate to income, to fund family law services for those in need

The town hall is open to our members and all interested parties. Registration is required to receive the instructions to sign in to the meeting.
