Given the uncertainty with COVID-19, what conditions would you need to have satisfied before you would feel comfortable attending IAPR conferences in-person again?

I would attend as things now stand today (wearing face masks and observing social distancing).

I would need to be vaccinated.

I would need to be vaccinated, AND I would need to know that a large percentage of all the conference participants have been vaccinated.

I would only attend after a substantial period of time (say, 6 months) in which there were very few new infections throughout the world.

I have no plans to attend IAPR conference in-person for the foreseeable future.

Assuming all of your safety criteria have been met, so that COVID-19 is no longer a concern to you, and given a choice between attending an upcoming IAPR conference live in-person or virtually, would you prefer:

By now, it is likely you have had some experience attending virtual conferences. In your experience:

Virtual conferences are just as good as in-person conferences, and in some ways even better.

Virtual conferences are an acceptable substitute when it is not possible to attend a conference in-person.

Virtual conferences fall short of an in-person conference in important ways, and I am eager to start attending in-person conferences again when it becomes safe.

What do you see as the major benefits of conferences with a virtual participation option, even when it is possible to attend in-person (check all that apply)?

Lower overall costs (no travel required).

Less of a time commitment, so it works better for my schedule.

Easier to balance with my other responsibilities (family, work, school).

Easier to attend new conferences I would not otherwise attend because of cost or distance.

Greater diversity of conference participants, which helps my career goals.

Harder to meet new people and make new professional connections.

Unable to travel and see new places.

Harder to focus on the scientific content because of distractions when attending virtually.

Fewer opportunities for sparking new ideas and new collaborations, which often happen in informal settings (e.g. at a conference lunch/dinner).

IAPR Goals

IAPR plans to increase membership and member involvement, and broaden participation from around the world, especially in locations where IAPR currently does not have a significant presence.

What efforts do you believe would be most useful to achieve the above (check all that apply)?

Encourage more geographic diversity when locating IAPR events around the world.

Support high quality virtual participation options for IAPR conferences, which would make travel less necessary.

Allow countries in the same region with relatively few researchers to combine and create a regional IAPR member society.

Price IAPR activities according to the economic wealth of each country.
