UNC Wilmington School of Social Work Partners with Wilkes Community College to Provide Bachelor’s Degree Pipeline

UNC Wilmington has partnered with Wilkes Community College to create a transfer opportunity for students wishing to pursue a bachelor’s degree in social work. Students who successfully complete an associate degree in the Human Services Technology program at Wilkes Community College and meet the admission requirements of the Bachelor of Social Work program at UNC Wilmington will be granted admission to the program.
The articulation agreement with UNC Wilmington provides a clear pathway for students to obtain a bachelor's degree, opens doors previously unavailable to community college graduates, and creates a direct pipeline to numerous job opportunities in government, social, and private settings. The social work courses will be available online, and students will receive personalized advising regarding the program and necessary courses once they are admitted.
Dr. Stacey Kolomer, director of the UNC Wilmington School of Social Work, says of the partnership, “Students in rural counties do not have many affordable options to earn an undergraduate degree, particularly if they are working professionals. At the heart of social work is social justice. We know there are not enough mental health and substance abuse counselors to serve in these rural areas, so the School of Social Work is excited to provide a pipeline to train professionals to meet the needs of their communities.”
“We are excited and grateful to partner with UNC Wilmington and provide a seamless pathway for Human Services Technology students to earn their bachelor's degree in social work. As a community plagued by poverty and other social challenges, this opportunity allows WCC to expand credentialing options for students and ultimately serve the needs of our rural community,” said Tammy Beck, dean of Health Sciences at Wilkes Community College.
Students who complete the A.A.S. Human Services Technology degree at Wilkes Community College and the Bachelor of Social Work degree at UNC Wilmington can easily progress into the Master of Social Work program with advanced standing, thus shortening the length of their time in graduate school.
