Message from the Chair
Welcome to another issue of the Integral! Once again, we say goodbye to several of our colleagues – this time three mathematics educators, Cheryl Kneubuhler, Ann Leitze, and Kathy Shafer with a combined total of well over a half-century educating future teachers! We sincerely appreciate all that they have done for our students and wish each all the best in their retirement. They will be missed.
Congratulations to students, alumni, and faculty alike – graduating senior McKenna Kaczinowski was awarded the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship; the actuarial graduate student team of Austin Kennedy and Zach Stricklin advanced to the semi-final round in this year’s SOA Research Institute Case Study Challenge; our Actuarial Exam Reimbursement Project raised 171% of our initial goal; and colleagues Holly Dickin, Faezeh Soleimani, and Kyla Whitehair were each honored for achievements in teaching, scholarship, and service.
Please see details on each of these, as well other departmental events and accomplishments of alumni Chris Jackson (Applied Mathematics, 2012) and Nicole (Steif) Stull (Middle School Mathematics Teaching, 2018).
Our department continues to publish the Mathematics Exchange - our peer-reviewed undergraduate research journal. If you haven’t had a chance to read the latest articles, I encourage you to do so—a link to all the issues (available in pdf format) can be found in this newsletter.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Karls
