Thousands of Connecticut Ratepayers Sign Petition Opposing United Illuminating Company Rate Increase Request

Close up of electric meter

AARP Connecticut submitted to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) a petition that was signed by thousands of Connecticut residents in the 17 towns serviced by United Illuminating Company opposing the utility provider’s request to implement a rate increase on the regulated delivery portion of electric bills. This will significantly raise the cost of electricity for Connecticut ratepayers, who already pay the highest retail electricity price in the continental United States, by nearly 15% over three years. If approved, the rate increase would be in addition to a significant increase in the cost of deregulated supply that will take effect on January 1, 2023.

In addition to the petition signed by thousands of ratepayers, in October AARP Connecticut submitted public testimony urging PURA to deny the proposed rate increase by United Illuminating Company, which would make the essential service be unaffordable for many older adults.

Residents are allowed to shop for the deregulated supply portion of their bills by going to www.energizect.com and searching for offers that might reduce their bills overall.

The petition signed by thousands of Connecticut residents follows:

Speak out on United Illuminating Company's 15% Rate Increase Request

The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) is currently considering a proposal by the United Illuminating Company to implement a rate increase that will raise the cost of electricity for Connecticut ratepayers by 15% over three years.

The proposed 15% increase would harm customers when they are already facing soaring energy costs as well as high inflation on almost all consumer goods, harming the state’s most vulnerable households.

Tell PURA to reject UI's rate increase request!

I urge the PURA to deny the proposal by UI that will raise electric distribution rates by 15% over three years.
