MODEL MOTION: NO TO OFFSHORE DETENTION – OPPOSE THE HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT

Notes:

1) The government’s ‘Hostile Environment’ for refugees and migrants is a central part of its strategy to deflect opposition during the ongoing ‘party gate’ scandal and the spiralling cost of living crisis.

2) That the Nationality and Borders Act all but removes the legal right to claim asylum in Britain and threatens the citizenship rights of 6 million people.

3) The plans to ‘offshore’ asylum seekers to Rwanda represents a further intensification of the hostile environment.

4) That the Ukraine war and the Afghan crisis have shown the government’s refusal to step up to its international responsibilities to care for refugees fleeing war zones.

5) The withdrawal of Priti Patel’s potentially lethal ‘push backs’ in the channel in the face of campaigning and legal challenge.

Believes

1) That we cannot allow scapegoating and racism
by the government to divide our communities and workplaces.

2) That all refugees deserve the right to safe passage, care and respect.

Resolves:

1) To campaign against the Nationality and Borders Act and it’s outcomes if it becomes law.

2) To oppose all attempts to offshore refugees.

3) Make a donation of ……………. to Care4Calais to support refugees.

4) To affiliate to Stand Up To Racism

5) To support Stand Up To Racism’s initiatives campaigning against offshore detention, the Nationality and Borders Act and the racist hostile environment
