Sustainable Research Pathways Workshop

November 30 – December 3, 2021

Are you ready to take the next step in your academic career?

Apply to the 2021-2022 Sustainable Research Pathways (SRP) program! Sustainable Horizons Institute (SHI) and Berkeley Lab are partnering for the seventh consecutive year to provide aspiring faculty and students across a variety of institutions (Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Liberal Arts Colleges, Community Colleges, Public/State Universities, etc) with the opportunity to participate in a potentially life-changing experience and further their research. SRP has fostered nearly 250 collaborations between scientists from under-represented groups (women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, etc) and esteemed Berkeley Lab scientists.

Interested in collaborating with world-class DOE scientists, but don’t know how?

The goal of the SRP Workshop is to prepare participants for a collaborative summer research experience. Participants first take part in a matching workshop to share their research interests and learn about exciting Berkeley Lab research areas across a variety of disciplines. Workshop activities include an informal Q&A/preparatory webinar, an exploratory and matching workshop, and one-on-one matching sessions to discuss possible research collaborations with potential mentors.

Matched participants develop proposals for summer internships and apply for funding. Faculty and students expand their network by connecting with renowned lab staff and other participants from institutions across the country.

Who can participate?

We are accepting applications from faculty-student teams and unaccompanied undergraduate and graduate students.
Eligible applicants must be a full-time faculty member or student at an accredited US degree-granting institution of higher education.

Workshop Schedule

Applications are due on Friday, September 24!

How do I participate?

Submit your application! Lab scientists review applications and select participants based on their potential for a research collaboration match.

Selected participants will be invited to the virtual workshop!

Workshop Activities:

  • Networking/welcome session
  • Staff research presentations
  • Faculty and student research interests presentations
  • Faculty and student poster sessions
  • One-on-one “speed matching” meetings to explore possibilities

What’s New?

We are excited to announce that the Quantum Information Science & Technology group (QuIST) at Berkeley Lab will be participating in the 2021 SRP Workshop! Learn more about one of QuIST’s flagship programs, the Advanced Quantum Testbed and their current projects.

Testimonials

“SRP proved to be an excellent opportunity to expand the number of researchers I collaborate with in a research-intensive setup… I appreciated the chance to work closely with other women researchers that share equal challenges, especially as starting this Fall, I will be the sole female tenured faculty in my department. I am a Computer Scientist, and in my field, there are very few women. I have always worked to find funding, to support teams of women students, and to mentor students to stay in the field… I plan to continue working on these research projects during the academic year and involve YSU undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing research.”

Alina Lazar, Faculty at Youngstown State University

“I participated in the SRP Workshop twice… As a University of Kentucky Master’s in Computer Science student, I was fortunate to connect with SHI, which accelerated my development by making it possible for me to learn from top experts though an internship at Berkeley Lab. Thanks to the experience, I moved on to being a data scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where I have been expanding into new frontiers of applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to design safer, more efficacious drug treatments… I look forward to continuing to represent minorities in STEM and advocate for increasing their engagement in my career.”
