Illinois Legislative Session Ends with Big Wins for Kids

“I applaud Governor Pritzker for being a steadfast champion for children, and thank our policymakers for prioritizing kids and families during this year’s legislative session,” said John Gaudette, Illinois State Manager for Save the Children Action Network.

Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2022) – Save the Children Action Network, the political advocacy arm of Save the Children, is excited by all the Illinois legislature accomplished for kids during this year’s legislative session. The budget includes robust investments of $54 million for the Early Childhood Block Grant, as well as $7 million for Early Intervention, which helps children with disabilities from birth to three get the support they need to thrive. While there was no increase in funding for the Child Care Assistance Program, the Pritzker administration committed to increasing child care provider reimbursement rates twice over the next fiscal year.

“I applaud Governor Pritzker for being a steadfast champion for children, and thank our policymakers for prioritizing kids and families during this year’s legislative session,” said John Gaudette, Illinois State Manager for Save the Children Action Network. “Now, Illinois has more funding for vital pre-school and home visiting programs, and increased support for families seeking affordable child care.”

Since the start of this year’s legislative session, Save the Children Action Network – together with coalition partners – urged the Illinois General Assembly to invest much needed funds into critical early childhood programs. Over the course of the session, Save the Children Action Network advocates sent over 600 messages to 154 legislators and participated in virtual advocacy days.

“This year’s victories are a testament to the power of grassroots advocacy,” continued Gaudette. “I commend our advocates and coalition partners for their dedicated advocacy and am looking forward to continuing to work together with Illinois legislators to ensure our kids get strongest start in life.”
