Watch a Gorgeous New Video for The Beatles’ “I’m Only Sleeping”; ‘Revolver’ Special Edition Box Set Out Now

One of the key tracks on an album full of incredible moments, “I’m Only Sleeping” is a highlight of Revolver, the Beatles‘ 1966 album that was just revisited for a deluxe Special Edition box set collection.

The reissue came out on Oct. 28 and packs a bounty of bonus tracks, outtakes and session material from John, Paul, George and Ringo, and has spawned a new video for “I’m Only Sleeping,” as well.

Per the video’s official description:

Artist and director Em Cooper explored the space between dreaming and wakefulness, working on an animation rostrum on sheets of celluloid. She painted every frame individually in oil-paint, a labourious process which took many months.

In our new feature, Revolver Special Edition curator Giles Martin discussed some of the work that went into bringing this long-awaited reissue to life:

“One of the surprising things about Revolver” for instance, is that George Harrison put Rubber Soul and Revolver together but they have very different feels to them. Rubber Soul feels more like ‘Dr. Robert’ from Revolver, where it still has that Mersey swing to it, that kind of feel to it, and Revolver doesn’t. Revolver is very sophisticated in its rhythm templates and everything about it. It’s much more of a concept album than Sgt. Pepper in lots of ways because everything is so different on it.

“Even the other day, when I was listening and EQ-ing the room for this press event, it’s like EQ-ing seven different bands. That’s what Revolver is. And Paul said to me, ‘This is the band at the peak of our individuality going, ‘we want to be this band and we want to be this band.” And the thing is, they all agreed on what type of band they should be, they were all different and that’s when my dad came into fruition by just being completely open-minded.

“As an A&R producer to do Revolver at that time, you’d be there going, ‘Well, where’s the single?’ How people are now, let’s try and follow the same formula. ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ is still an extraordinarily odd song to have on an album now. There’s nothing else like it.”
