Monroe County has been applauded for its efforts to employ individuals living with a disability.

The New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID) awarded the county the Local Government Customer of the Year award earlier this week.

Monroe County has contracts with local NYSID-affiliated organizations, including Lifetime Assistance, CDS Monarch and the Rochester Rehabilitation Center. The organizations provide janitorial and custodial services, document destruction and document imaging services.

“Individuals with disabilities deserve rewarding employment opportunities that support being included in our communities,” Maureen E. O’Brien, NYSID president and CEO, said in a news release. “Under the leadership of County Executive (Adam) Bello, Monroe County government agencies recognize the social and economic value of this inclusion. Their NYSID purchases contribute to employment and personal independence for approximately 75 individuals with disabilities annually.”

Since Bello became county executive to start 2020, NYSID contracts have increased by 42 percent and the county has committed more than $1 million to support employment of individuals living with disabilities.

“Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the foundation of everything we do in Monroe County, and that extends to who we employ,” Bello said in a news release. “Working with NYSID agencies is a good investment that does not sacrifice quality by expanding opportunity.

“One of the most critical things government can do is help citizens find employment opportunities where they can excel and provide for themselves. The personal fulfillment that people experience when they have a good job is unmatched.”
