Meal Swipe Program (Pilot Program)

We are accepting applications for meal swipe awards. Award recipients will receive 10 meal swipes to use at Hale Aloha or Gateway Cafes only. You must be logged into your hawaii.edu email account to access the google form application. The application, with more information, is available at https://forms.gle/bvkY1ik1PvBXCRty5.

If 10 meal swipes are not enough, students may apply for additional meal awards by submitting subsequent applications after using their previous meal swipe award. Currently the maximum combined meal award is 50 meal swipes per year, per UHM student. We may revisit this maximum based on a combination of number of applications and meal swipe donations received.

Swipe it Forward: We are currently accepting meal swipe donations from students who will not use all of their meals by Saturday evenings when meal plans reset. Donations of meal swipes are accepted at Hale Aloha and Gateway Cafes. Please let the cashier know you wish to donate meal swipes to FVH.

Partnerships:

Since opening in October 2018, SLD has experimented with other opportunities to address food insecurity such as Food Drop @ the Campus Center Courtyard in partnership with Hawaii Health and Harm Reduction Center and the Hawaii FoodBank (pre-Covid). This event went on hiatus during COVID, and was restarted in the Spring of 2023.

FVH successfully established itself as a recipient agency with Aloha Harvest, a food recovery organization. Aloha Harvest has provided FVH with recovered produce and bread for the pantry. FVH is also the recipient of regular food and toiletries donations from members of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Holy Nativity Church, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

FVH is appreciative of donations received from non-profits Healthy Steps Hawaii, KeikiAde, and the Noelani School PTA.

Sodexo, our campus food service provider has partnered with FVH to offer the Meal Swipe Program. Thank you, Sodexo.

We are very thankful for the generosity of these agencies and donors throughout our campus and larger communities for supporting UHM students. There is an abundance of aloha for UHM students in need.

ABOUT FVH

Food Vault Hawai‘i (FVH) was initiated by the Associated Students of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (ASUH) in Spring 2018 through ASUH Senate Resolution 06-18. FVH was thereafter established in Fall 2018 through the collaboration of the ASUH, the Campus Center Board (CCB), the Student Activity and Program Fee Board (SAPFB), and the Office of Student Life and Development (SLD). FVH is operated by SLD with the support of three student fellow positions funded by the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success. The purpose of FVH is to assist students facing food insecurity starting with non-perishable food and toiletries during the pilot.

ASUH leaders expressed a desire that the FVH pantry be open to any current UHM student who finds themselves in need of food.

At its inception, FVH was intended to run a three year pilot program from Fall 2018 through Spring 2021, then to review data to assess the continued need. The COVID-19 pandemic hit in the middle of the second year of the pilot impacting operations and the data. Post-pandemic, the pantry will complete two additional years of operations to have a full three years of “pilot” data for review. This will likely include the 22-23 and 23-24 academic years.

The initial start-up funds to establish FVH came from ASUH, SAPFB, and SLD. The initial $1,000 required to establish the FVH UH Foundation account came from the generosity of 88 Supermarket on Ke’eaumoku, Young Tae Kim (Korean Chamber of Commerce), and former ASUH senate member: Jessica Chen.
