Course Description

25 HOURS OF SOCIAL WORK CONTINUING EDUCATION

This is a 25-hour self-paced course including 1 CE for suicide prevention that will provide you with an intermediate level of understanding the impact of racism as trauma. In addition, this course has now been approved for continuing education through NASW. 

Course Objectives

  1. Recount the origin of race in America, the ideology of race, and the historical ramifications of racism.
  2. Obtain a general understanding of the origin of race in America.
  3. Obtain a general understanding of the ideology of race.
  4. Develop an understanding of the historical ramifications of racism. 
  5. Define Critical Race Theory and explore how Critical Race Theory shifted the understanding of race as a construct.
  6. Obtain a basic understanding of Critical Race Theory.
  7. Develop an understanding of Critical Race Theory Tenets.
  8. Recognize how racism, trauma, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder impacts Black and Indigenous People of Color. 
  9. Develop an understanding of how racism and trauma impacts BIPOC communities. 
  10. Learn the history of policing and the impact of people of color in the U.S.
  11. Develop an understanding of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome. 
  12. Identify how racism and white supremacy have shaped the definitions of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome.
  13. Recognize symptoms of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome in the treatment of BIPOC. 
  14. Describe cultural humility and how to use cultural humility and empathy when discussing race in clinical settings.
  15. Apply ways to work with your own feelings and reactions when discussing race.
  16. Draw connections between BIPOC, suicide, and the impact of racism. 
  17. Assess for suicide indicators using assessment tools.
  18. Describe the impact of racism and white supremacy on the mental health system and higher education.
  19. Learn about the impact of racism and white supremacy on the mental health system and higher education.
  20. Listen to how people working in the mental health field have been impacted by systematic racism.
  21. Learn how folks in the mental health and healthcare field are impacted by racism.
  22. Hear ways people in the field are utilizing self-care.
