Passport to History Month is a celebration of the places, stories, and community that bring local history to life.

Each weekend in July, participating historic and cultural sites in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding counties will open their doors to the public with free tours, activities, and programs for visitors of all ages. See the schedule for Weekend 5 below:

Horner’s Cemetery

Sunday, July 30 — by appointment only

Horner’s Cemetery Historical Society is celebrating the 295th anniversary of the founding of Craig’s Scotch-Irish Settlement – the oldest, longest, permanent settlement in the Lehigh Valley – with tours available Sundays between 1- 4 p.m. (*By appointment only). Meet General Brown, friend of President George Washington. Hear about the gift Washington gave to Brown. Visit with the ancestor of President Roosevelt. Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum

Enjoy free admission to Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum on Saturday. Visitors can also tour the newly refurbished 1770 Trout Hall, the oldest home in Allentown and the summer estate of Allentown’s founder’s son, James Allen.


Lower Saucon Township Historical Society: Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse

Saturday, July 29 — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Visitors can step back in time to experience the learning environment of students who attended the one-room schoolhouse during the years 1880-1958. Artifacts and documents, including textbooks, maps, and photographs, allow visitors to develop a chronology of the schoolhouse and to construct a timeline that reveals changes that occurred in education in Pennsylvania.


Quakertown Historical Society

Saturday, July 29 — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tour the Burgess Foulke House, home of the first Burgess of Quakertown, and learn the history of the town and its people.

Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center

Saturday, July 29 — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Take “A Culinary Journey from Germany to Pennsylvania” and from farm to table. Explore our galleries of farm and food production equipment with hunt sheets to learn how food was made as well as a brand-new exhibit on Pennsylvania German food. Take home a special gift (one per child). On Saturday, also enjoy tours of a Pennsylvania bank barn and visit the Education Room for activities.


The TileWorks of Bucks County

Saturday, July 29 — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Established in 1912, Henry Mercer’s Moravian Pottery and Tile Works produces unique, artistic tiles that epitomized the ideals of the American Arts & Crafts movement: craftsmanship, simplicity, beauty, utility, and the importance of nature. His tiles were sought after by leading architects and tastemakers and adorned public and private buildings across the country. Visit for tours on Saturday, July 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (tours begin every half hour). Learn about the Spanish Mission architecture and watch the artisans make the heritage tiles.


Whitehall Historical Preservation Society
