Associate Professor of Economics and International Affairs

Bilge Erten is an Associate Professor of Economics and International Affairs and a Faculty Scholar at the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research at Northeastern University. She is a Visiting Associate Professor at the Institute for Economic Development (IED) at Boston University for 2021-2022.

Her research interests lie in Development Economics, with a focus on Gender, Health, and Education. Most of her recent work explores the causes and consequences of domestic violence and mental health conditions in developing countries. Recent projects focus on how COVID-19 lockdowns affect mental health and domestic violence outcomes using different natural experiments. Ongoing projects also explore determinants of physical and mental health disparities experienced by children in different contexts.

Professor Erten is an Associate Editor at Feminist Economics and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Pabor (IZA).

Her work has been featured in the Financial Times, the Huffington Post, the Bloomberg View, the NPR Marketplace, and the Western Producer.

Prior to joining Northeastern faculty, Professor Erten was a postdoctoral research scholar of the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University. She received her PhD in Economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
